Handmade cookies are a tangible and vital expression of Christ?s love and witness from the outside Christian community during this life-changing weekend. Cookies are distributed to every prison resident and staff member during the 3-day weekend. Here are some Important Cookie Instructions 1. Bake only sturdy chocolate chip cookies. 2. Do not add fruit, nuts or coatings of any kind. Make only PLAIN chocolate chip cookies. 3. Please size the finished cookies to be about 2-1/2 inches in diameter. 4. Bag cookies in freezer bags. One dozen cookies per bag. One quart freezer bags are the best size to use. 5. Allow cookies to cool completely before bagging. Warm cookies will stick together and can not be used. 6. Pack bagged cookies in a sturdy box, such as a shoe box or a copy paper box so they will safely make the trip to the correctional institution. 7. Cookies may be given to any Kairos team member before the Kairos weekend begins. Agape of all kind is an important part of every Kairos Weekend. With another Kairos Weekend right around the corner we offer the following general Kairos Agape guidelines: Kairos Adult Agape: 1. Cookies: See special instructions above for the chocolate chip cookies. 2. Green Agape: money for Kairos is separate from Emmaus. If you would like to make a donation to Kairos make your checks out to Kairos of North Carolina. 3. Prayers: Please sign one of the ? praying for you? chain links. These links are made into a chain and put together on the weekend and placed around the talk room for the residents. Prayer chain sign up sheets will be available at the next gathering. 4. Written Agape: Anyone wishing to hand write agape must follow all Kairos and Correctional Institution guidelines or the Agape cannot be forwarded to residents. a. no bookmarkers, pens, pencils, machine printed materials, stickers or anything with glue can be used for Agape b. All 43 residents must receive the same agape from Adults. c. All 43 notes, letters, or words of encouragement are to be submitted on exactly the same note cards, postcards or stationary. The same ink pen must be used for each piece of Agape. The note may not vary in content. d. Place handwritten Agape in an unsealed envelope. Sealed envelope are discarded. e. Please allow the Lord to form your letter. We ask that you not write to them about their crime or sentencing but focus on the Christian message of God? s love Kairos Children? s Agape: Children? s agape is greatly valued by the prison residents. But there are a few rules that must be followed. 1. Construction paper folded with hand drawn pictures and notes or Bible verses in crayon, markers or colored pencils are GREAT. 2. No tape, stickers or glue can be given to the residents. 3. Please have children sign first names and age only. Please don? t put church names on the note. 4. Do not put cards or other Agape into sealed envelopes. 5. Unlike adult agape, children? s letters do not need to be alike or be in groups of 43. -- End Newsletter --- Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 18:37:41 -0400 From: "Miriam Hughes" To: Subject: Albemarle Emmaus Email Phillip, Please note the contacts for Bertie CorrectionalInstitute in Windsor NC : John "Tony" Hughes - Merry Hill, NC 252-331-3622 Cell Temp chair. Hey Delores I want to use my newsletter to pray for an Emmaus walk but the team names are in one issue and the Pilgrims in another. I've already tossed out the older issue not realzing that I needed it for the team names. Why can't you put the entire weekend of team and Pilgrim names in the same newsletter & then I only need to keep one on hand to pray during the weekend vigil. [ Single Issue ] Dear Issue: Thanks for your question. Although we are in shock that you would want to thrown any past newsletter out we realize that it's something that must be done. However, to answer your question, scheduling and available space play important parts in when we print team and Pilgrim names. Walk team members are selected, in most cases, before the Pilgrim application deadline passes and are therefor available long before any Pilgrim names are available. Running the team in one issue and Pilgrims in another helps spread out the information. Pilgrims go in at the last minute, which is the issue just before the walk, because names are seldom available before that, and even when they are changes take place more often with Pilgrims than team members. We have at times listed team and Pilgrims in the same newsletter, but more often than not the team goes in one newsletter & Pilgrims in the next. I hope this helps. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------- Lay Directors for AC 35 are ??: Jeff Winslow & Marvin Ownley Adult Female & Youth Female AC 35 is ?? at Mid-Atlantic Universtity in Elizabeth City. --------------------------------------------- Board Notes: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the Director: A New Resource for You I hope all of you are looking forward to a great 2010, a year that we can serve our Lord so the church can be renewed. To that extent, the International Emmaus/Chrysalis Office has just released a new DVD: "Introduction to the Walk to Emmaus." We hope you will to use it in your communities and around your regions. This eleven-minute movie explains the Emmaus movement, offers testimonies, and helps the viewer understand Emmaus as it relates to the local church. One free copy of the DVD is being mailed to each Community Lay Director. You can view the movie here at the website, share the video, or order your own copy for a mere $10. (To order, call Deana Frederick at 615-340-7227 or download and mail in this handy DVD order form.) It is our hope that you will use this DVD with the Emmaus brochures to introduce the Walk to Emmaus movement to churches not involved in Emmaus. Share this DVD with Christians of any denomination who want to take another step in faith. Blessings Greg Engroff It takes a lot of "stuff" to put on a 3-day weekend. Here is a list of some of the items needed to complete an average Chrysalis weekend. 50 Warm fuzzies - for Caterpillars & table leaders 50 Caterpillar Pins - for Caterpillars & table leaders 50 Cocoon pins - for Caterpillars & table leaders 50 I'm Lovable butterfly shaped felt pieces - for Caterpillars & table leaders 50 Butterfly foam clothespins - for Caterpillars & table leaders 50 First, Second, & Third Day cards - Caterpillars & table leaders for each day (we have someone who usually makes these for us) Cloth Agape Bags - 50 for Caterpillars (and team who can't locate theirs) Placemats: DeColores - 110 Friday lunch Miscellaneous - 110 Friday dinner Rise to a New Day - 110 Saturday morning Butterfly Mats to Sign - 110 Sunday morning (the Chrysalis Agape team do these to be consistent) Fly With Christ - 110 Sunday lunch The lanyards for our Chrysalis crosses are made out of rawhide, so we buy the rawhide and put a cross on enough lanyards for each Caterpillar to have one. and 145 individual prayer times on the weekend Prayer Vigil Trying to provide everything on this list can be rather taxing for one person, even for the best of us. If you break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks it isn't so hard. For example, if you complete only 2 place mats every other day (with time off for vacations and none on Sundays) one person alone could provide all the placemats needed for an entire weekend. You might say it's a little like trying to eat an elephant; you just take one bite at a time. So, if you would like to help supply any of these items, contact Chrysalis Community Agape Coordinator Paula Allen. 91 Rose And Allen Lane Pantego, NC 27860-9548 H: (252) 935-5125 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plug-In to the Movement! In order to sponsor someone on Walk to Emmaus, a person must first have been on The Walk itself and willing to share that experience with another new Emmaus participant. The sponsorship of a previous participant frees the current participant from any personal responsibilities that might distract him or her while on their weekend. Sponsorship also under girds each participant's 72-hour experience with prayer and other expressions of God's love. According to the dictionary, a sponsor is one who takes responsibility for another. The suffix "-ship" refers to the skill involved in the activity. So sponsorship is the skill of taking responsibility for another. The aim of a sponsor should not be "to get all my friends to go," to fill up the weekend, to fix people's problems, or to reproduce one's own religious experience in others. Rather, the aim of the sponsor is to bring spiritual revitalization to Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and vision to the work of the church in the congregation, home, workplace, and community. The aim of sponsorship is to build up the body of Christ. Sponsorship is an act of love for God, for the participants in the Walk to Emmaus, for the Emmaus Community, and for the church. It is a demonstration of agape love. A sponsor will: * Pray for the participant's openness to God's call to discipleship. * Make an appointment with the participant (or participating couple) to discuss his or her participation in Emmaus. * Invite the participant to take part in Emmaus for the sake of a more vital relationship with Jesus Christ. The sponsor shares his or her faith, explains the basic purpose, elements, and follow-up dimensions of the Walk. * Ask the participant to make a commitment by filling out a registration form. If the participant is married, the sponsor will speak with both partners and encourage an equal commitment by both spouses. * Support the participant's Walk with prayers, candlelight and Agape. A good sponsor will also support the participant's family by house-sitting, baby-sitting, watering plants, picking up mail, feeding pets, or just checking in with a spouse to see if any help or support is needed. * Encourage the participant in his/her continued journey and take the participant to Emmaus "gatherings" after the Walk weekend is over. * Help the participant re-enter his or her church and consider ways to act out new commitment and enthusiasm. * Help the participant sponsor others. A sponsor should also be active in a Fourth Day Reunion Group. Having been through a weekend and being in ongoing spiritual formation through Fourth Day groups gives one perspective on how to sponsor. Attend one of the Day of Deeper Understanding trainings scheduled throughout the year in order to be a sponsor. Beyond these requirements, the basic attitude of a sponsor is one of prayerful discernment. This results in intentional acts of unconditional love, or what is often termed "the first act of agape." A resource for further help is the Emmaus Library Series booklet, Sponsorship, by Richard and Janine Gilmore. The following is an excerpt from Sponsorship: "Sponsorship can be unwise or wise. Unwise sponsorship results from unbridled enthusiasm that wants everyone to have the same experience. Sponsors with unbridled enthusiasm approach anybody and everybody with the admonition that "you need to go on The Walk," and that open invitation is the primary (sometimes the only) emphasis. This approach lacks discernment and will result in a burden for the church. Such efforts in sponsorship frequently result in religious fringe groups within the church or possibly a parachurch of "Emmausites." While the individual being sponsored may benefit, that individual does not go back into the church to foster growth and renewal. The lack of commitment at this point is contrary to the purpose of Emmaus. Wise sponsorship is careful, intentional, prayerful, and purposeful because it results from God's leading. The pilgrims return to their churches and community renewed in their commitment to be effective disciples." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FILLER: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some Principles & Techniques to Remember Author unknown You will never outgrow warfare; you simply mustlearn to fight. Emmaus expands participant's spiritual lives, deepens their discipleship, and rekindles their gifts as Christian leaders in their churches and communities. These aims are accomplished not only during the tree day Emmaus Walk, but through attending monthly Gatherings, Sponsorship and support of Walks, and service on Emmaus teams. Persons whose spiritual lives are renewed and strengthened through Emmaus are called to share the grace they receive in their community and to be positive influences in their local churches. The purpose of Emmaus is generally not fully realized during the three days of the event itself; but, rather in the Fourth Day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I apologize for this automatic reply to your email. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant of all." HISTORY The Walk to Emmaus is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo Movement, which originated in Spain in 1949. Cursillo de Cristianidad means "little course in Christianity." STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION The Walk to Emmaus is grounded theologically and institutionally in The Upper Room ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church. ABOUT THE NAME ?WALK TO EMMAUS? The Walk to Emmaus gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. HOW TO ATTEND To get involved in Emmaus, each person must have a spiritual sponsor who has already attended Emmaus him- or herself. If you have a friend who has been to Emmaus, ask your friend to tell you about his or her experience with the program. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM A WEEKEND The Walk to Emmaus offers today's disciples a parallel opportunity to rediscover Christ's presence in their lives, to gain fresh understanding of God's transforming grace, and to form friendships that foster faith and support spiritual maturity. While Emmaus provides a pathway to the mountaintop of God's love, it also supports pilgrims' return to the world in the power of the Spirit to share the love they have received with a hurtful and hurting world. Compiled by Wendy Warr ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FILLER: Board Notes & Other Information from Past Newsletters Newsletter information needs to be in to the newsletter editor at that month's Gathering. I Please do not reserve or set aside seats for latecomers at Send-offs, Gatherings or Closings. Doing so makes it difficult for others who do arrive on time to find a seat. Sometimes this leaves people standing when those seats being saved for others remain empty. Double-check your name on the web site prayer vigil in case we misspell a name or list it at the wrong time. Remember to use your "refresh" button when checking newsletters for updated information. Some computers hold the original version in memory & do not let you see the new one without asking for it. Clicking the "refresh" button asks your computer to show you the newer version of a web page. Make a note that the Pilgrim/Caterpillar application deadlines listed in the Community Calendar are for priority consideration for the next walk. The last date a Pilgrim/Caterpillar can be accepted is when a weekend's team starts meeting. However, remember also that applications are considered on a first-come first-serve basis and we cannot guarantee anyone that a Pilgrim will be able to attend any specific walk. Sponsors are reminded to check their Pilgrim's application to make sure all information has been completed correctly including contact information. And don't forget that sponsors must complete the sponsor's part of the application as well. Use black ink for the application and when making copies please use white paper. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz gives four principles to practice in order to create love and happiness in your life. The Four Agreements are: 1. Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love. 2. Don?t Take Anything Personally Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won?t be the victim of needless suffering. 3. Don?t Make Assumptions Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. Much stress is created when people assume they know what other people are thinking without checking with them. Understanding that other people might have different motivations for their actions, even drastically varying world views, and remembering to really try to understand others and discuss these motivations before jumping to conclusions about their behavior, can go a long way toward preventing interpersonal conflict. 4. Always Do Your Best Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret. Do the best you can at any given moment, and you'll have no regrets. Some days, your best isn't as good as other days, and that's okay. As long as you put an honest effort into life, you will have nothing to be ashamed of, and will not 'beat yourself up' over a less-than-stellar performance in retrospect. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emmaus Sponsorship this information is from the Upper Room Emmaus Web Site Each person who attends The Walk to Emmaus has a sponsor. Maybe present a text only option? ---------------------------- Time to Team It's no secret that everyone leads a busy life these days. Work, Little League, dance recitals, chores, meetings, house/yard/automobile maintenance, long work commutes, and extra responsibilities all demand a piece of our time. Even well- intentioned activities can keep us from seeing the glaring needs right in front of us and serving others. Think back to the final few hours of your Emmaus Walk. Your Lay Director was giving you a Fourth Day talk and telling you of service opportunities in the community. Participating as a team member is one of those service opportunities. We encourage everyone to prayerfully consider being a team member. Many members of our community will tell you that if they had never teamed their cross and warm fuzzy would have found a drawer for safe keeping until there was a conveniently scheduled gathering. It was through the teaming process that we formed true relationships with other members of the community. It wasn't until we teamed that our eyes were opened so that we truly understood all that went on behind the scenes. It was not until after we teamed that we appreciated the sacrifices that allow willing hearts to serve. Teaming on Emmaus or Chrysalis brings a joy similar to that of a parent on Christmas morning. Teaming allows us to see and witness a new found joy in Christ. Teaming helps others to see the face of Jesus and the body of Christ at work in us. And, oh the blessings you will receive! God warns that life is short and we should seek and desire His will in our lives daily instead of planning out all of the good things we do by our own wisdom (James 4: 14-15). The Holy Spirit is the only one who can tune us in to the needs of our community and the needs of others. However, we must be listening and willing to allow Him to interrupt our plans. Sometimes, with so many opportunities, it can be difficult to know just which needs God wants us to meet. But through prayer, and a sincere desire to seek Him, He will help us discern how and when He wants to work through us to bless and serve others by teaming on a walk or flight. An Emmaus or Chrysalis team fits together like a jigsaw puzzle. Nobody does it all. Everyone brings different talents with which to form the final picture of service. It is God that takes team members and molds them and qualifies them to carry out His will. Our prayer is that you will ask God's guidance in applying to team. We promise a blessing that will far exceed your expectations. "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet."
