I can’t think of a more wonderful way to have spent celebrating New Year’s Eve, than to have spent it celebrating Christ at the Gathering and Chrysalis Candlelight Service. It was exciting to be in a crowded gym at Mid-Atlantic Christian University, as we showed God’s love to 28 caterpillars! Our future is in good hands. As we begin the year 2012, I want to express my gratitude to the Emmaus community for your continued commitment to serving God and furthering His kingdom. I pray that your Emmaus experience, no matter when it was, changed your life, and that it continues to do so. Although I earnestly hope and pray that you serve God in your home church, I also hope and pray that you continue serving God by your support for Emmaus. We need your continued support for Emmaus by sponsoring, teaming, and of course by praying. Remember the wonderful gift of God’s Love and Grace you received on your Emmaus Walk and pass it on! Please prayerfully consider sponsoring or teaming. If fees prevent you from doing either, please make a board member aware of it. There are people in the community who willing help financially when they know of a need. Another way you can serve our community is by serving on the Emmaus Board. Elections are coming at our May Gathering, and we need to elect 4 lay members (2 women and 2 men) plus 2 clergy (1 to replace Pastor Max Edwards, who leaves with 1 year remaining in his term). The term length for Emmaus Board members is 3 years; each year we elect 2 men and 2 women and 1 clergy to replace those completing their terms. Please prayerfully consider this important service opportunity and notify me or any board member of your willingness to serve. Let me know if there is anything else you need. I am amazed by God’s grace that I could even be part of a weekend like this and to serve with God-centered, incredible, selfless men and women eager to further the Kingdom of God. AC-36 was more than a success, God transformed lives forever, and through this flight He is rising up future leaders for Chrysalis and His kingdom. I want to thank the Community for there awesome support over the weekend and taking time out of your New Years Eve schedule for candlelight. Knowing the obstacals we faced before this flight took place and seeing God take it and make it His, all I can say is to God be the glory! Praise God for His faithfulness, mercy, and love!...Challenge: Albemarle Emmaus community, lets come together like we have never before and surrender everything to God so that He may move through us to reach this region for Christ. “That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:19-20 Fly with Christ! -Jesse Sutherland LD, AC-36 Philip: Following is Brianna's message for the newsletter... What a surprising weekend! I was personally amazed with how God took those that were not only faithful TO Him, but had immense faith IN Him and turned this weekend into a success for the Kingdom. Those who were called and willing were definitely equipped by God for AC-36 as there would have been nothing positive to say otherwise; but praise God that now there is nothing but positive to say as I got to personally get to know those special Caterpillars turned Butterflies as well as get to know a group of people that formed into more than just a group to an actual team--family, rather. I know Jesse and I stand in agreement on the fact that we were doubly blessed and humbled as lay directors to get to directly serve the youth. Such well-behaved and truly inspiring youth had answered the call to be there that weekend and that was just another of the many blessings we had received. The support of the Community also overwhelmed me with a sense of thankfulness as I saw them sacrifice their New Year's evening to be a blessing to all of us. I can now confidently see that where man saw no way for this flight to take place God truly saw a bigger and more selfless picture. It was major agape to me that the team caught the vision of that and did not give up on the call...and I dare say the youth that were served that weekend felt the same way! -Bri LD, AC-36 Jesse will have his to me today to look over and then either he or I will send it to you. Have you received everything else needed or are you waiting for other information? Rita Happy New Year Emmaus of the Albemarle Community! It was great to see many of you New Year’s Eve at the AC 36 candlelight and thank you again for your support of this flight through your prayers, presence, and sponsorship! As I have said before Chrysalis is in the season of revival and I invite you to join us! In the next few months Chrysalis has multiple events taking place, which we invite you to take part of and we encourage you to bring the butterflies and youth from your churches along with you. On Saturday February 11th Chrysalis will be holding a Day of Deeper Understanding at 2:30pm at Evangelical Methodist Church in Elizabeth City. Later that evening, at the same location, we will be hosting the monthly gathering. On Saturday March 10th at 5pm Chrysalis will be a Free to Fly event. This will be a time of worship, eating and fellowship with fellow butterflies. Who is invited? Anyone who is a butterfly of AC 1 through AC 36, youth interested in attending Chrysalis or adults that have been or are involved with Chrysalis. On Saturday April 14th we will be holding an informational session at Open Door Church. This event is to increase the knowledge of Chrysalis in the Albemarle area. We will be explaining in detail what it is, who it is intended for, when it occurs as well as a question and answer session. Who is invited? All pastors and youth pastors of churches in the entire Albemarle area. For more information on this event please feel free to contact Buddy Lawrence at (252) 339-4216 or millrun@centurylink.net . I would also like to ask you to begin praying for the team and caterpillars of AC 37, which is scheduled to be held at Mid-Atlantic Christian University July 19th through the 22nd. Fly With Christ! Warm Fuzzies and Joy Flags are needed for both of the Fall Walks, placemats are needed for EA94. When making warm fuzzies and joy flags please make 40 of each, this will allow for enough for a full weekend and any that may not survive packing/shipping/storage and for each to be similar in size and style. We will need Warm Fuzzies, Lanyards, Joy Flags, Placemats, and First Stones for the weekends in the spring walks and forward. Currently, we are well stocked with cloth bags, clothes pins and the felt cutouts for buttons. Instructions for each item of agape needed for a weekend may be found on the Emmaus website and will be available at gatherings, along with the placemats. Placemats are by far the biggest need for the weekends; we need 160 DeColores and Good Morning/Rise & Shine placemats, as well as decorated placemats for 5 more meals, or an additional 800 placemats for fall or spring weekends. For 4 walks per year that is 320 Good Morning/Rise & Shine, 320 DeColores, and 1600 other placemats, when we have a 5th walk , well we need even more! I do not have enough placemats to provide for both of the weekends, which will be here before we know it. Lanyards and Warm Fuzzies are also always needed, 40 per weekend, or a minimum of 160 per year, same with first stones. Let’s not forget the Joy Flags; unfortunately, I had to throw away the stock which was sent to me, as they were attacked by mice! So for each weekend we use/need the following for Agape: Placemats: DeColores and Good Morning = 80 each; misc. decorated 400 Lanyards: 40 same size and thickness Warm Fuzzies: 40 same size (or as close as possible) Joy Flags: 40 made from same materials (foam or contact paper) First Stones: 40 Clothes Pins: 40 Felt Cut Outs: 40 Cloth Bags: 40 I know there are times when someone will make special agape for a certain weekend. When you do this please let me know, this will help to determine what needs there actually are for a weekend so I only send what is needed and or make the appropriate requests from the community. Making Agape is a great way to have some fun and fellowship within your reunion group, a group within your church or just a group of friends within the community. As you can see the needs are great for each weekend. Please consider what you can do to bless the Pilgrims who are joining our community by providing some of the Agape needs. You may reach me by calling 757-589-2790, or emailing therealmrsbrucewillis@yahoo.com , or even through the Emmaus Facebook page. ================================================ ================================================ Please Pray For These Walk Weekends You can be part of an Emmaus weekend by joining one or both Prayer Vigils. To answer those questions and other questions you may not have thought of yet a Day of Deeper Understanding is scheduled for Nov. 12 at Manteo Baptist Church in Manteo, NC. A community Gathering is at 6:30pm that same evening, also at Manteo Baptist Church. A Day of Deeper Understanding (often called DoDU) is designed to give Pilgrims a much deeper and better understanding of the purpose and structure of the Walk to Emmaus Movement. At a DoDU you will be presented with information about Sponsorship, Teaming, the many different forms of Agape and how you can be involved within Emmaus. A DoDU also moves us away from an attitude that the Walk to Emmaus weekend was just a wonderful weekend experience and toward an understanding of how the gift of an Emmaus weekend provides a structure for a lifetime experience of Christian love and service. As usual this Day of Deeper will begin promptly at 2:30pm , so please plan to arrive early enough to sign in and still have time for fellowship with old and new friends. There is no fee; the sign-in is to help keep track of everyone attending. Please note that a DoDU is required prior to the date that team or sponsor applications are due . . . . not just prior to when teaming sessions begin. This Day of Deeper Understanding is early enough to allow everyone ample time to meet the Spring Walk teaming deadline of December 1st. God can use you if you are willing to be used. Don't think that DoDU sessions are limited to new community members. Anyone can attend a DoDU and even long-time members might learn something new or re-learn something forgotten. We are always updating our DoDU information, so there's always something to learn by attending. ================================================ Pilgrim & Caterpillar Applications As our past Community Lay Director Vernon Lee once pointed out during a Saturday gathering, deadlines posted for Pilgrim & Caterpillar application due dates are not the end of the application process. Those dates are just for first consideration into the next weekend walk or flight. With that in mind, it is a very good idea not to wait until the last minute to send in an application. We need to keep working on those applications all year long. We accept them all year long. ================================================ Sponsor Tips If you are not sure what a sponsor does, you may want to review these Sponsorship Tips: 1. Pray for the person's openness to God's call to discipleship . . . not for how to get them on a walk. 2. Make an appointment to visit with the person or couple to discuss the possibility of them attending a walk. 3. Extend an invitation. Invite them to attend a weekend for a more vital relationship with Jesus Christ . . . an Emmaus Weekend is not just a weekend retreat or getaway. 4. Share YOUR faith and explain the basic elements of a walk . . . its purpose and how it helps us live in a life of grace for the rest of our lives. Have the attitude that you are giving them a wonderful gift rather than that they need to go. 5. Answer questions honestly . . . Emmaus is not a secret organization. You do not have to explain everything, but you do want to explain about what they want to know. 6. Ask them to make a commitment by filling out the application form. If the person is married, speak with both partners and encourage an equal commitment by both spouses. 7. Continue to pray . . . and when they agree to go, and are accepted for a weekend, prepare agape letters and enlist support of their pastor and family to collect personal agape letters. 8. Remember, if you have to talk them into attending a weekend you can expect to have to talk them into everything else as well. ================================================ Emmaus Suggested Reading List Share this reading list (provided in PDF format) with pilgrims to help them deepen their Fouth Days. For example, if you complete only 2 place mats every other day (with time off for vacations and none on Sundays) one person alone could provide all the placemats needed for an entire weekend. You might say it's a little like trying to eat an elephant; you just take one bite at a time. So, if you would like to help supply any of these items, contact Chrysalis Community Agape Coordinator Paula Allen. 91 Rose And Allen Lane Pantego, NC 27860-9548 H: (252) 935-5125 FILLER: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some Principles & Techniques to Remember Author unknown You will never outgrow warfare; you simply mustlearn to fight. Emmaus expands participant's spiritual lives, deepens their discipleship, and rekindles their gifts as Christian leaders in their churches and communities. These aims are accomplished not only during the tree day Emmaus Walk, but through attending monthly Gatherings, Sponsorship and support of Walks, and service on Emmaus teams. Persons whose spiritual lives are renewed and strengthened through Emmaus are called to share the grace they receive in their community and to be positive influences in their local churches. The purpose of Emmaus is generally not fully realized during the three days of the event itself; but, rather in the Fourth Day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I apologize for this automatic reply to your email. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant of all." HISTORY The Walk to Emmaus is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo Movement, which originated in Spain in 1949. Cursillo de Cristianidad means "little course in Christianity." STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION The Walk to Emmaus is grounded theologically and institutionally in The Upper Room ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church. ABOUT THE NAME ?WALK TO EMMAUS? The Walk to Emmaus gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. HOW TO ATTEND To get involved in Emmaus, each person must have a spiritual sponsor who has already attended Emmaus him- or herself. If you have a friend who has been to Emmaus, ask your friend to tell you about his or her experience with the program. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM A WEEKEND The Walk to Emmaus offers today's disciples a parallel opportunity to rediscover Christ's presence in their lives, to gain fresh understanding of God's transforming grace, and to form friendships that foster faith and support spiritual maturity. While Emmaus provides a pathway to the mountaintop of God's love, it also supports pilgrims' return to the world in the power of the Spirit to share the love they have received with a hurtful and hurting world. Please do not reserve or set aside seats for latecomers at Send-offs, Gatherings or Closings. Doing so makes it difficult for others who do arrive on time to find a seat. Sometimes this leaves people standing when those seats being saved for others remain empty. Double-check your name on the web site prayer vigil in case we misspell a name or list it at the wrong time. Remember to use your "refresh" button when checking newsletters for updated information. Some computers hold the original version in memory & do not let you see the new one without asking for it. Clicking the "refresh" button asks your computer to show you the newer version of a web page. Make a note that the Pilgrim/Caterpillar application deadlines listed in the Community Calendar are for priority consideration for the next walk. The last date a Pilgrim/Caterpillar can be accepted is when a weekend's team starts meeting. However, remember also that applications are considered on a first-come first-serve basis and we cannot guarantee anyone that a Pilgrim will be able to attend any specific walk. Sponsors are reminded to check their Pilgrim's application to make sure all information has been completed correctly including contact information. And don't forget that sponsors must complete the sponsor's part of the application as well. Use black ink for the application and when making copies please use white paper. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emmaus Sponsorship this information is from the Upper Room Emmaus Web Site Each person who attends The Walk to Emmaus has a sponsor. In order to sponsor someone on Walk to Emmaus, a person must first have been on The Walk itself and willing to share that experience with another new Emmaus participant. The sponsorship of a previous participant frees the current participant from any personal responsibilities that might distract him or her while on their weekend. Sponsorship also under girds each participant's 72-hour experience with prayer and other expressions of God's love. According to the dictionary, a sponsor is one who takes responsibility for another. The suffix "-ship" refers to the skill involved in the activity. So sponsorship is the skill of taking responsibility for another. The aim of a sponsor should not be "to get all my friends to go," to fill up the weekend, to fix people's problems, or to reproduce one's own religious experience in others. Rather, the aim of the sponsor is to bring spiritual revitalization to Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and vision to the work of the church in the congregation, home, workplace, and community. The aim of sponsorship is to build up the body of Christ. Sponsorship is an act of love for God, for the participants in the Walk to Emmaus, for the Emmaus Community, and for the church. It is a demonstration of agape love. A sponsor will: Pray for the participant's openness to God's call to discipleship. Make an appointment with the participant (or participating couple) to discuss his or her participation in Emmaus. Invite the participant to take part in Emmaus for the sake of a more vital relationship with Jesus Christ. The sponsor shares his or her faith, explains the basic purpose, elements, and follow-up dimensions of the Walk. Ask the participant to make a commitment by filling out a registration form. If the participant is married, the sponsor will speak with both partners and encourage an equal commitment by both spouses. Support the participant's Walk with prayers, candlelight and Agape. A good sponsor will also support the participant's family by house-sitting, baby-sitting, watering plants, picking up mail, feeding pets, or just checking in with a spouse to see if any help or support is needed. Encourage the participant in his/her continued journey and take the participant to Emmaus "gatherings" after the Walk weekend is over. Help the participant re-enter his or her church and consider ways to act out new commitment and enthusiasm. Help the participant sponsor others. A sponsor should also be active in a Fourth Day Reunion Group. Having been through a weekend and being in ongoing spiritual formation through Fourth Day groups gives one perspective on how to sponsor. Attend one of the Day of Deeper Understanding trainings scheduled throughout the year in order to be a sponsor. Beyond these requirements, the basic attitude of a sponsor is one of prayerful discernment. This results in intentional acts of unconditional love, or what is often termed "the first act of agape." A resource for further help is the Emmaus Library Series booklet, Sponsorship, by Richard and Janine Gilmore. The following is an excerpt from Sponsorship: "Sponsorship can be unwise or wise. Unwise sponsorship results from unbridled enthusiasm that wants everyone to have the same experience. Sponsors with unbridled enthusiasm approach anybody and everybody with the admonition that "you need to go on The Walk," and that open invitation is the primary (sometimes the only) emphasis. This approach lacks discernment and will result in a burden for the church. Such efforts in sponsorship frequently result in religious fringe groups within the church or possibly a parachurch of "Emmausites." While the individual being sponsored may benefit, that individual does not go back into the church to foster growth and renewal. The lack of commitment at this point is contrary to the purpose of Emmaus. Wise sponsorship is careful, intentional, prayerful, and purposeful because it results from God's leading. The pilgrims return to their churches and community renewed in their commitment to be effective disciples." ------------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 2010 16:50:39 -0400 From: "JRZ" To: Subject: AE Message I'd like to get a printout of the "What isChrysalis Page" that is readable. Maybe present a text only option? ---------------------------- Time to Team It's no secret that everyone leads a busy life these days. Work, Little League, dance recitals, chores, meetings, house/yard/automobile maintenance, long work commutes, and extra responsibilities all demand a piece of our time. Even well- intentioned activities can keep us from seeing the glaring needs right in front of us and serving others. Think back to the final few hours of your Emmaus Walk. Your Lay Director was giving you a Fourth Day talk and telling you of service opportunities in the community. Participating as a team member is one of those service opportunities. We encourage everyone to prayerfully consider being a team member. Many members of our community will tell you that if they had never teamed their cross and warm fuzzy would have found a drawer for safe keeping until there was a conveniently scheduled gathering. It was through the teaming process that we formed true relationships with other members of the community. It wasn't until we teamed that our eyes were opened so that we truly understood all that went on behind the scenes. It was not until after we teamed that we appreciated the sacrifices that allow willing hearts to serve. Teaming on Emmaus or Chrysalis brings a joy similar to that of a parent on Christmas morning. Teaming allows us to see and witness a new found joy in Christ. Teaming helps others to see the face of Jesus and the body of Christ at work in us. And, oh the blessings you will receive! God warns that life is short and we should seek and desire His will in our lives daily instead of planning out all of the good things we do by our own wisdom (James 4: 14-15). The Holy Spirit is the only one who can tune us in to the needs of our community and the needs of others. However, we must be listening and willing to allow Him to interrupt our plans. Sometimes, with so many opportunities, it can be difficult to know just which needs God wants us to meet. But through prayer, and a sincere desire to seek Him, He will help us discern how and when He wants to work through us to bless and serve others by teaming on a walk or flight. An Emmaus or Chrysalis team fits together like a jigsaw puzzle. Nobody does it all. Everyone brings different talents with which to form the final picture of service. It is God that takes team members and molds them and qualifies them to carry out His will. Our prayer is that you will ask God's guidance in applying to team. We promise a blessing that will far exceed your expectations. "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." John 13: 14 ---------------------------- Some tips to help you move toward obedience that builds your faith: * Simplify your life. - Pray for help to cut out nonessentials. * Share your life. - Begin investing more time, energy and resources in the lives of others. Our faith is relational. * Share your faith. - This will enlarge your confidence in God's work in your life and will plant seeds for His work in the lives of others. * Stay focused. - Don't make obedience to God another "to-do" list item. Ask God to help you focus on what He wants from you. BOTTOM LINE View your obedience to God's Word as an expression of your love for Him. So join others in a reunion group or create your own reunion group . You will forever be grateful for taking this step. If you form your new group, please let the newsletter editor know the name, meeting time, meeting place and who the members are so we can share the information with the community. ------------------ Kairos 2011 Schedule Feb.10-12, 2012 FORSYTH,GA Kairos Inside Location:Ramada Inn Convention Center, 480 Holiday Cir. You're in good company. Moses stuttered. David's armor didn't fit. John Mark was rejected by Paul. Timothy had ulcers. Hosea's wife was a prostitute. Amos' only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning. Jacob was a liar. David had an affair. Solomon was too rich. Jesus was too poor. Abraham was too old. David was too young. Peter was afraid of death. Lazarus was dead. John was self-righteous. Naomi was a widow. Paul was a murderer. So was Moses. Jonah ran from God. Miriam was a gossip. Gideon and Thomas both doubted. Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal. Elijah was burned out. John the Baptist was a loudmouth. Martha was a worry-wart. Mary was lazy. Samson had long hair. Noah got drunk. Did I mention that Moses had a short fuse? So did Peter, Paul-well, lots of folks did. But God doesn't require a job interview. He doesn't hire and fire like most bosses, because He's more our Dad than our Boss. He doesn't look at financial gain or loss. He's not prejudiced or partial, not judging, grudging, sassy, or brassy, not deaf to our cry, not blind to our need. As much as we try, God's gifts are free. We could do wonderful things for wonderful people and still not be...Wonderful. Satan says, "You're not worthy." Jesus says, "So what? I AM." Satan looks back and sees our mistakes. God looks back and sees the cross. He doesn't calculate what you did in '78. It's not even on the record. Sure. There are lots of reasons why God shouldn't have called us. But if we are magically in love with Him, if we hunger for Him more than our next breath, He'll use us in spite of who we are, where we've been, or what we look like. I pray that as Christians, we will step out of our limitations into the illimitable nature of who God is. Then our passion for God and our passion to communicate with Him will make mincemeat of our limitations.
