Emmaus Sponsorship
this information is from the Upper Room Emmaus Web Site
Each person who attends The Walk to Emmaus® has a sponsor. In order to sponsor someone on Walk to Emmaus, a person must first have been on The Walk itself and willing to share that experience with another new Emmaus participant. The sponsorship of a previous participant frees the current participant from any personal responsibilities that might distract him or her while on their weekend. Sponsorship also under girds each participant's 72-hour experience with prayer and other expressions of God's love.
According to the dictionary, a sponsor is one who takes responsibility for another.
The suffix "-ship" refers to the skill involved in the activity. So sponsorship is
the skill of taking responsibility for another.
The aim of a sponsor should not be "to get all my friends to go," to fill up the
weekend, to fix people's problems, or to reproduce one's own religious experience
in others. Rather, the aim of the sponsor is to bring spiritual revitalization to
Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and vision to the work of the church
in the congregation, home, workplace, and community. The aim of sponsorship is to
build up the body of Christ.
Sponsorship is an act of love for God, for the participants in the Walk to Emmaus,
for the Emmaus Community, and for the church. It is a demonstration of agape love.
A sponsor will:
- Pray for the participant's openness to God's call to discipleship.
- Make an appointment with the participant (or participating couple) to discuss his or her participation in Emmaus.
- Invite the participant to take part in Emmaus for the sake of a more vital relationship with Jesus Christ. The sponsor shares his or her faith, explains the basic purpose, elements, and follow-up dimensions of the Walk.
- Ask the participant to make a commitment by filling out a registration form. If the participant is married, the sponsor will speak with both partners and encourage an equal commitment by both spouses.
- Support the participant's Walk with prayers, candlelight and Agape. A good sponsor will also support the participant's family by house-sitting, baby-sitting, watering plants, picking up mail, feeding pets, or just checking in with a spouse to see if any help or support is needed.
- Encourage the participant in his/her continued journey and take the participant to Emmaus "gatherings" after the Walk weekend is over.
- Help the participant re-enter his or her church and consider ways to act out new commitment and enthusiasm.
- Help the participant sponsor others.
A sponsor should also be active in a Fourth Day Reunion Group. Having been through a weekend and being in ongoing spiritual formation through Fourth Day groups gives one perspective on how to sponsor. Attend one of the Day of Deeper Understanding trainings scheduled throughout the year in order to be a sponsor.
Beyond these requirements, the basic attitude of a sponsor is one of prayerful discernment. This results in intentional acts of unconditional love, or what is often termed "the first act of agape." A resource for further help is the Emmaus Library Series booklet, Sponsorship, by Richard and Janine Gilmore. The following is an excerpt from Sponsorship:
"Sponsorship can be unwise or wise. Unwise sponsorship results from unbridled enthusiasm that wants everyone to have the same experience. Sponsors with unbridled enthusiasm approach anybody and everybody with the admonition that "you need to go on The Walk," and that open invitation is the primary (sometimes the only) emphasis. This approach lacks discernment and will result in a burden for the church. Such efforts in sponsorship frequently result in religious fringe groups within the church or possibly a parachurch of "Emmausites." While the individual being sponsored may benefit, that individual does not go back into the church to foster growth and renewal. The lack of commitment at this point is contrary to the purpose of Emmaus.
Wise sponsorship is careful, intentional, prayerful, and purposeful because it results from God's leading. The pilgrims return to their churches and community renewed in their commitment to be effective disciples."

Greetings from Our Community Lay Director
and Highlights of
the April 18, 2004, Board Meeting |
|
|
|
The Albemarle Emmaus Community should feel very good about the persons the community has elected to serve as board members. Your board continues to make wise decisions after prayerful consideration and often-lengthy discussion on matters presented to them.
For several months, the board has reviewed and discussed the policies and procedures from International Emmaus. All local Emmaus communities around the globe, including our Albemarle Emmaus Community, are expected to follow the weekend model from International Emmaus. Last May, Scoofer Jordan, The Emmaus District Director, met with our board to review this model and also to learn of the “local flavor” components we believe to be important for the Albemarle community.
The model states that each local community should establish a Team Selection Committee. Following lengthy and prayerful discussion at recent board meetings and also at a special meeting in February, the board has approved the following guidelines and procedures:
Policy—Selection of Weekend Lay Director and Team
- Selection of Weekend Lay Director
The Albemarle Emmaus Board will select the weekend lay director from the list of those persons eligible to serve in this position. Following the acceptance by the person chosen to serve as weekend lay director, the board will give him/her a packet of information and request that he/she meet with the board to review the packet.
- Selection of Weekend Head Spiritual Director and Cadre
The weekend lay director will present the names of three eligible pastors to serve as head spiritual director for the weekend. The board selects the head spiritual director for the walk. The board will provide the weekend lay director and head spiritual director with a list of persons eligible to serve on the cadre including pastors eligible to serve as assistant spiritual directors.
- Team Selection Committee
The team selection committee will consist of six persons selected by the board. The committee will serve a two-year term.
a. A current community board member who will serve as chairman of the Team Selection Committee
b. Head Community Spiritual Director
c. A Spiritual Director from the community who has served on a women’s walk
d. A recent past Community Board member
e. Two recent past weekend lay directors — man and woman
- Cadre and Team Selection
a. The board shall set a date for a meeting for the weekend lay director and head spiritual director to present recommendations to the team selection committee for assistant spiritual directors and cadre. The weekend lay director will then contact the selected cadre including assistant spiritual directors.
b. A second meeting of the team selection committee will be scheduled to receive recommendations from the lay director and head spiritual director for the remainder of the team.
c. The team selection committee makes the final decision in the selection of cadre and remaining team members. The team shall consist of 33 members plus 3 — 5 spiritual directors.
- Effective Date of Policy
This policy becomes effective for all walks scheduled after January 1, 2005. This team selection process will begin in the fall of 2004 in preparation for the January and spring 2005 walks.
Additional items from the April 18th board meeting include encouraging all churches in the Albemarle Community to support and become involved in disaster relief efforts through financial support and volunteer teams. The board was informed that many families continue to need this assistance.
Ministers who desire to serve as spiritual directors on weekend walks are encouraged to apply first to team for a position other than spiritual director on a walk, to sponsor pilgrims for the weekend walks, and to be active in gatherings and reunion groups.
Don’t forget to vote for new board members by either mailing your signed ballot so that it is received by May 5th or by attending the May Gathering to vote. New board members will attend the June 13th board meeting as observers and become official board members with full voting privileges in July. Our community officers for 2004-2005 will be elected at the June meeting and assume office in July.
I look forward to seeing each of you on May 8th at the First Assembly of God Church in Edenton for the monthly gathering. May God bless each of you.
