Lay Director Comments

Folks, I believe that many of us need to be reminded that the sanctity of Candlelight can be obscured by using anything other than our flashlight candles during the ceremony. It's easy to get swept up in the excitement of the evening, but a subtle glimpse of a loving face in the crowd can be much more effective than overtly drawing attention to ones self.

Here is something extracted from the Upper Room Handbook on Emmaus:

The purpose of Candlelight is to move the Pilgrims to a deeper realization of God's love and to demonstrate the support of a Christian community for their life as faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Though Candlelight is a moving experience for both Pilgrims and community, its purpose is not to create a mountain top experience for its own sake. Candlelight prepares the way for the time of personal prayer and recommitment that follows upon the Emmaus community's departure. [The anointing service] . . . Community members are asked to preserve the integrity of the service and not to block or confuse the Pilgrim's entry by reaching out to touch them as they pass. Community members reaching out to touch the Pilgrims can obscure the vision Pilgrims often have of God's love filling the sanctuary, seeing Jesus in the faces of the people, and the presence of a heavenly host with the communion of saints. Let the Pilgrims have their own experience.

We should all try to remember that Candlelight is a sacred and spiritual occasion to raise the awareness of God's loving presence - not only for the Pilgrims but for every member of the Community. Let's fully support this special moment.

Just a reminder - while this Emmaus Community fully supports all forms of Christian outreach, our Gatherings serve a specific purpose for the Community. It is a time for singing, praising God, fellowship, sharing in the witness of our 4th Day Speaker and Holy Communion. It is not the appropriate place for editorializing, promotions, or solicitations.

I'm pleased that Day of Deeper attendance was the best that I have witnessed, and the information was presented thoroughly and professionally. We welcome the new members of the Albemarle Emmaus Community and hope they will join us for the May 14th Gathering and annual elections.

Until then may the Lord Jesus Christ continue to bless you and keep you in your loving service to Him and one another.

Punk Daniels,   Community Lay Director

May is Albemarle Emmaus Election Month

The merry month of May is right around the corner and with it our annual Albemarle Emmaus and Albemarle Chrysalis Board of Director elections. Ballots like the one below will be provided at the May 14th Gathering @ Open Door Baptist Church, 1255 Haughton Road, Edenton. Click here for a map to the church.   Each ballot is required to have a signature on it. Absentee ballots may be mailed one per envelope.

The top two vote-getters for Emmaus men and women are for three year terms, replacing Doug Spaeth, Punk Daniels, Heidi Sawyer and Hattie Downing who rotate off the Board. The number three vote getter for Emmaus men will be for a two year term to replace John Collins who resigned from the Board for personal reasons.

One Emmaus Spiritual Director is being elected for a three year term and the other SD for a two year term, in order of total votes. The two year term is a replacement for David Mansingh who moved out of the Albemarle area.

All Chrysalis nominations for the upcoming elections are for at-large Board members to replace our outgoing members Gib Harrison, Cher Valure, Kyle Jones and Buffy White as they rotate off the Board. All Chrysalis replacements will serve 3 year terms.

Every position has room to write in your own candidate.

Copy the ballot in your paper newsletter, cut it out and use it, or print an Acrobat pdf copy. You can bring one with your selections already marked, send it by a friend, or mail it to Albemarle Emmaus of Eastern NC, Post Office Box 1198 Edenton, NC 27932 provided it is received before May 7th. Gathering starts at 6:30 PM. Be sure to be on time May 14th so your vote can be counted.
