A Message From Our
Community Lay Director
It was once said that our greatest danger in life is in permitting the urgent things to crowd out the important. We find ourselves often complaining about the busyness of our lives, as if we are out of control, slaves to a schedule that we have little if any control over. Surely there are those things that must be done that are significant to our daily routines. But in the midst of our harried lives, there must be time to reflect, contemplate, and evaluate.

We are entering the season where busy people get busier. Thanksgiving and Christmas call us to reflection and celebration, yet many of us find ourselves too busy, too over scheduled to truly experience the significance of these celebrations. Every year we think it will be different. Every year we talk about slowing down to honor the real meaning of these holidays. But good intentions aren't enough when it comes to spiritual preparation for significant events.

It doesn't have to be that way. You and I have control over our calendars and the choices we make. During these last two months of 2005 and all the busyness they bring, let's focus on the significance of Thanksgiving and Christmas. . . .seasons of gratitude and celebration. Let's make time in our hectic schedules to reflect on God's goodness and provision. That will be time well spent!

May peace, comfort and joy be with each and everyone during this holiday season.

Candlelight Services Notes

It is important to remember that Candlelight Services are reverent services on a Walk. Surely we are all excited to see our Pilgrim, but the reason we are at a Candlelight Service is to share God's love with every pilgrim. With that in mind, here are some common questions with answers that, hopefully, will help keep every Candlelight Services the reverent service is intended to be.
  1. Why are we asked to not touch the pilgrims?
Logistically speaking it is not possible — there are 42 Pilgrims and more than 400 community members at a Candlelight . . . if everybody tried to touch everybody . . . WHEW, just imagine! Nothing else would get done.

  2. Why are asked to only use light up candles and not flashing lights and glow lights anymore?
Candlelight is a reverent service designed by Upper Room Emmaus as a way for the Pilgrims to see the face of Jesus in the community. Jesus was the Light of the World and a simple battery operated candle conveys this most appropriately. Flashing lights do not spread the light, they draw attention.

  3. Where do I get a simple battery operated candle?
Each pilgrim attending a Walk to Emmaus in the Albemarle Emmaus community (after AE48) has received a battery operated candle. Others similar candles or lights can be purchased at many church supply stores like Cokesbury or online. Now is a great time to find battery operated lights if you do not already have one. Christmas is approaching and stores are stocking up (food for thought).

  4. Are there things we need to know to make Candlelight services most effective that perhaps we do not know?
Please remember to come for the Gathering, not just Candlelight - we are a community and supporting a 4th day speaker and sharing Communion together is a great way to bond with Christ's church in fellowship. Also remember logistical directions are not designed to take away from your personal experience but they are designed to maximize safety and effectiveness. At the close of a Candlelight service we respectfully ask that you remain inside the facility until the bus has had time to depart. Please come early enough to sign placemats and above all come with a desire to welcome the Holy Spirit to shine forth from you and inhabit the hearts of all in attendance.
Just remember that Candlelight is about Pilgrims seeing Jesus, not seeing us act foolish or single ourselves out.

Power of Prayer

A Note About Community Prayer Requests
Prayer Requests are offered as a ministry to the Albemarle Emmaus Community. Concerns are listed for Community PRAYER, not to pry into the lives of others. Please remember that not everyone wants intimate details of their life made public, even if we are praying for them. Before adding any prayer to our list, make sure that someone wants to be on the list. Pray for any or all requests as you feel led.

arrow  Also provide some drinks and snacks (the visiting community will also bring snacks to help)

Was He Steady?

An ex-employer was being telephoned about a man who had applied for a job elsewhere. "Was he steady?" the prospective employer wanted to know.

"Steady?" the ex-boss said, "he was like a rock. From the time he got here until the moment he left, he didn't move."
