board meeting A Deeper Understanding Day people at meeting
Anyone that has completed a 3-day weekend and is interested in knowing more about Emmaus will not want to miss our next Day of Deeper Understanding, also called DoDU, Saturday, November 11th at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, 300 Ananias Dare Street, in Manteo.

As usual the Day of Deeper will begin promptly at 2:30pm so please plan to allow yourself some extra time to sign in when you arrive.

A Day of Deeper Understanding is provided for all Pilgrims who attended a Walk to Emmaus weekend. This is designed to give participants a deeper understanding of the purpose and structure of the Walk to Emmaus Movement. At a DoDU you will learn more about Sponsorship, Teaming and many different forms of Agape you can be involved with.

However, the session is not limited to new members of the community. Anyone can attend and even long-time members might learn something new or re-learn things forgotten. Some of the information gets updated and there's always something everyone can learn by attending.

Mark your calendars and be sure to attend . . . even if you attended a DoDU many moons ago. Please remember; in order to sponsor someone in the future, or team on a walk, you must have attended a Day of Deeper Understanding.

We welcome all new Pilgrims to the Emmaus community and look forward to seeing a big crowd on November 11th.

Kairos Image Logo THE PURPOSE OF KAIROS Kairos Image Logo
Kairos helps establish strong Christian communities among the populations of correctional institutions. This is done through the impact of small, 3-to-5 person share and prayer groups of leaders resident in the institutions. These groups meet weekly to share their lives on a deep spiritual level and to pray for one another, for other residents and staff in the institutions. Kairos is a ministry of the church . . . a ministry of the apostles whom Jesus, the Christ, has called into community and sent forth into the environment of the correctional institution. Kairos has been called the best example of the early church in existence today. The objective of Kairos is to impact the correctional environment through the action of the leaders, as apostles of Jesus Christ, in all areas of human activity in the prison. You can be a part of this movement; it's easier than you think. Wanted: Kairos Kookies. Cookies are distributed to every resident and staff member during the three-day weekend. These homemade cookies are a tangible and vital expression of Christ's love and witness from the outside Christian community. PCI #14 will need up to 2,000 dozen cookies for the weekend. If you do the math you'll find that we will need 24,000 cookies!
Important Cookie Specifications:
  • Key Ingredient: Prayer
  • Bake ONLY sturdy Chocolate Chip Cookies.
  • DO NOT add fruit, nuts, or coating of ANY KIND to the cookies. Make only plain cookies.
  • Size: two to two and-a-half (2 - 2 1/2 ) inches in diameter. Thin, crisp cookies break easily and cannot be used. Cookies should be not more than 1/2 inch thick.
  • Allow cookies to COOL COMPLETELY before bagging. Warm cookies will stick together and cannot be used.
  • Bag cookies in zip-lock freezer bags, a dozen per bag. One-quart bags are the best size to use. DO NOT use the zipper type bags
  • Pack bags in sturdy boxes such as shoe box or copy paper box so they will survive the trip to prison.
  • Freeze any cookies not used within 3 days.
  • Cookies can be given to any Karios team member listed below.
Need a Chocolate Chip Recipe? Try this one:

  • 3/4 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1-1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 1-3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  1. Combine shortening, sugar, milk and vanilla in a large bowl, mix until well blended.
  2. Add egg and mix well. In a separate bowl combine flour, salt and baking soda, mix well.
  3. Add to shortening/sugar mixture until well blended. Stir in chocolate chips.
  4. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes for chewy cookies or 11 to 13 minutes for crisp cookies.
  6. Makes 3 dozen cookies.
Please Pray for the Residents attending PCI-14 Nov. 2 - 5th

Kairos Children's Agape

In addition to cookies, children's agape is greatly valued by the prison residents. However, there are a few rules that must be followed.

  •   Construction paper folded with hand drawn pictures and notes or Bible verses in crayon, markers or colored pencils are GREAT.
  •   No tape, stickers or glue can be given to the residents.
  •   Please have children sign first names and age only.
  •   Please don't put church names on the note.
  •   Do not put cards into sealed envelopes.
  •   Unlike adult agape, children's letter do not need to be alike or be in groups of 43.

There really are no Pilgrim application cutoff dates, dates listed for first consideration, anything after that goes to the next walk unless space becomes available on something earlier. So mark your calendars.

And, while you're making notes, make a note that Chrysalis and Emmaus sponsor fees must be paid by the date due stated in the sponsor letter.   If fees are not paid by the due date Pilgrims will not be permitted to attend the weekend.     That's one reason it is important that you save your sponsor letter when you receive it, to keep informed of all important dates.

Avoid being embarrassed and have your money in on time.

A Word From Our Community Lay Director:

Dear Albemarle Emmaus Community,

We just completed two walks . . . AE 68 and AE 69.   As always, God showed up in a powerful and mighty way.   Many community members remarked about how ready these pilgrims were, about how God wrapped them in His grace and His love.   Yes, you've heard it before . . . This was the BEST walk . . .   or   . . . This was the BEST team.   When we invite God into these weekends and wrap them in prayer, should we expect anything different?   Prayer definitely makes a difference!

It was so exciting to see a crowd that was "pumped up" and singing His praises at Candlelight.

I was actually hoarse myself when I left.   I pray that this enthusiasm, joy and excitement will carry over into the upcoming walks, flights and into the gatherings.

May you have blessings, I love you all . . .

    Freda Nelson

An AWESOME
AE 69 Weekend
On behalf of the Team of AE 69, we wish to welcome the Pilgrims of AE 69 to our AWESOME Albemarle Emmaus community. We want to really thank the Sponsors for the sacrifices they made sending these Awesome ladies and for their support of AE 69 from the beginning to the end. We had an AWESOME time and the presence of the Holy Spirit was incredible. We wish to thank everyone who helped make AE 69 the tool that it was including Sponsor's Hour, Saturday night dinner, Candlelight and Closing.
I personally want to thank the AWESOME team - this was one working bunch of men and women and to do all they did for the Glory of God was simply an awesome testimony to the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. When you're working for the Lord it's just amazing to see what can be accomplished!
Just like those original men on the Walk to Emmaus who's hearts were "strangely warmed" I pray that each of you will revisit in your mind your Emmaus experience and bring that spirit-warmed excitement to our Community Gatherings and Candlelights, to Sponsorship and to Teaming!

    God is AWESOME!
Marcia Danchise, Lay Director, AE 69
