A Community Lay Director Message

It never hurts to bring a   reverent spirit   with you to Candlelight. That is because each Candlelight is designed to be a worshipful service bringing the light of Christ to the Pilgrims on that walk.

It looks like, at times, in our joy and enthusiasm for the Pilgrims the abundance of flashing c o l o r e d lights changes a candlelight atmosphere to one that is more fun for the community and a “happy” celebration than the worship service it was designed to be.

Drawing attention to ourselves, or other individuals in the community, moves the Candlelight focus from Christ to man. That is just one of the reasons each new Pilgrim is issued the same style battery operated white light candle. We want to reflect the light not be the light.

Just prior to Candlelight we have a worship service of music, prayer, a Fourth Day Speaker and communion. Those are solemn events. After Candlelight Pilgrims have the evening prayer and rededication service. It does not take much imagination to see how a "happy" celebration would be counter productive for such a solemn ceremony.

You might want to look back at the Candlelight Services Notes in this past November's newsletter.   Come early enough to sign place mats where we can celebrate and socialized before the Gathering & Candlelight. Then we can welcome the Holy Spirit to shine forth from us and inhabit the hearts of all in attendance.

Let's keep the bright colors, costumes, and flashing lights for early Sunday morning when we observe the “Sonrise Celebration.”

Because Mananitas is a Cursillo term, to avoid any copyright infringement issues with Cursillo, we cannot use that term. That's why the Sunday morning get together formerly called Mananitas has become the Sunday “Sonrise Celebration.”

So, let's not forget that Candlelight is about Pilgrims seeing Jesus, not so Pilgrims can see any one person in the crowd. After all, we are trying to share God's love with every pilgrim.

DeColores     Mike Rowe

While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and walked with them.

THE WALK TO EMMAUS:
The Walk to Emmaus gets its name from the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the central image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Luke tells the story of that first Easter afternoon when the risen Christ appeared to the two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus.

WALK TO EMMAUS OVERVIEW:
The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being “a servant of all.”

HISTORY:
The Walk to Emmaus is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo (pronounced cur-SEE-o) Movement, which originated in Spain in 1949. Cursillo de Cristianidad means "little course in Christianity."

PROGRAM STRUCTURE:
The Walk to Emmaus is grounded theologically and institutionally in The Upper Room ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church.

PILGRIMS:
New Participants get involved in Emmaus when invited to attend by someone who has already attended a weekend walk and an instructional program called a Day of Deeper Understanding.

AE 66 & 67 Report

Carole Hill reports that we currently have Spring Walk AE #66 & AE #67 applications for 30 men and 34 women. Because it usually takes as many as 50 applications to find the normal 36 Pilgrims available to attend a walk, there is room for several more applications. However, DO NOT wait until the last minute to get an application in with the $40 application fee. Get the application in as soon as possible. The sooner the application gets in the higher it goes on the selection priority list.

Carole adds that if anyone has any questions about the applications or the application process they are welcome to call her at her home number (252) 791-0020, or .

Now is the time for those who will sponsor a Pilgrim to get started. Here are a few suggestions:
  1. “Know” the person you are considering sponsoring.
  2. Most of all pray about whom God wants you to sponsor and pray for that person each day.
  3. Answer your Pilgrims questions; just don’t go into detail. There are no secrets but there are some surprises.
  4. Let that person pay the $40.00 registration fee.
  5. Complete the sponsor’s part of the application.
  6. Start collecting personal letters for your Pilgrim as soon as they have accepted. Don’t wait till the last minute. Bring them with the Pilgrim to Send off Thursday night.
  7. Get their application in early.
If you take the time to do this before you ask someone, God's will can be accomplished.

A Reminder To Sponsors:
A. Stay in touch with your Pilgrim by:
  1) A phone call
  2) A note
  3) A night out
B. Encourage a Reunion Group
  1) Help to start a group for them
  2) Invite them to your group
C. Be available
  1) Day Of Deeper Understanding
(if they were not able to attend in the past)

  2) Gatherings
  3) Encourage community involvement

A Successful
AC Flight
  # 26
The Holy Spirit truly moved through the team of AC 26 and awesomely touched each heart of the sixteen girls and fourteen boys on the flight. Our team prayers were answered in many ways including unseasonably warm and dry weather throughout the weekend. Special thanks you go out to the sponsors for prayerfully selecting the Caterpillars (now Butterflies) you sent to us that were ready to go when they arrived on Thursday night. Also we would like to thank the entire Albemarle Emmaus and Chrysalis Communities for the huge number of those of you who attended Candlelight, Mananitas, and Closing. Everyone on the flight of AC 26, Butterflies and Team alike, truly are spiritually renewed and closer to our Lord and say, “I AM YOURS!

Summer Counseling Positions

Cale Retreat is looking for a few good men & women for its summer counseling staff.

If you know of any young Christian man or woman between the ages of 15 and 24 who is spiritually “on track” in their personal life with Christ, please call Steve Carter with their name, or suggest to them that they check out the summer counseling position on the Cale web site. A job description and application are there.

For many young people, God has used their time serving at Cale as a life changing event for them!
