May is Albemarle Emmaus Election Month

May will be here before you know it and along with it will be the flowers from April showers and our annual Albemarle Emmaus and Albemarle Chrysalis Board of Director elections.

Ballots like the one below will be provided at the May 13th Gathering @ Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City on US Hwy 17. Click here for a map to the church.   Each ballot is required to have a signature on it. Absentee ballots may be mailed one per envelope.

The top two vote-getters for Emmaus men and women are for three year terms, replacing Cheryl Williams, Mike Rowe, and Dan Lynam who rotate off the Board.

An Emmaus Spiritual Director is being elected for a three year term.

All Chrysalis nominations for the upcoming elections are for at-large Board members to replace our outgoing members Dave Berry, Vicki Brady, Michelle Eure, Carrie Harrell, and Bobby Layden as they rotate off the Board. All Chrysalis replacements will serve 3 year terms.

Every position has room to write in your own candidate. However, before writing in a candidate's name please take the time to confirm with that person that they are willing and able to serve as a Board member.

Copy the ballot in your paper newsletter, or cut it out and use it, or print a Acrobat pdf copy. You can bring one with your selections already marked, send it by a friend, or mail it to Albemarle Emmaus of Eastern NC, Post Office Box 1198 Edenton, NC 27932 provided it is received before May 6th.

The May 13th Gathering starts at 6:30 pm so be sure you are on time for your vote to be counted.

A Message From
Our Community
Lay Director

Sure enough, it always seems to happen that just when you find that perfect spot in your most comfortable easy chair, the phone rings or there's a knock at the door. It can be aggravating to be shaken from that comfortable place you worked so hard to achieve, regardless of the source of that interruption.

Do we get too comfortable spiritually, so much so that we don't like being shaken to action by the call of God? The answer to this question for most, if not all of us is yes. It is easy for the Christian and the church to grow comfortable, allowing a certain sense of complacency to make us slow to act or react to the voice of God.

The same is true for us in the Albemarle Emmaus community. I believe we have grown too complacent as members of the Albemarle Emmaus community. Many of us merely stand on the sidelines while the "regulars" attend gatherings and team walk after walk.

I have on many occasions encouraged new members to the community to become active in the community through participation in gatherings, teaming and sponsorship.

I have also encouraged the established members of the community be more active as well. Unfortunately, attendance at gatherings continues to be consistently low. It has been increasingly difficult to get the required number of team members and pilgrims for a walk. This all in a community that numbers nearly 2500 members.

I believe God is challenging us to get up out of our easy chair and to step forward in faith. It is not time for idle comfort, but rather a time for committed action. We find ourselves often complaining about the busyness of our lives, as if we are out of control, slaves to a schedule that we have little if any control over. It doesn't have to be that way. You and I have control over our calendars and the choices we make. Let's make time in our hectic schedules to set aside the second Saturday of each month to attend an Emmaus gathering and reflect on God's goodness and provision. That will be time well spent!

      Your Community Lay Director,

Mike Rowe

KAIROS
It's not too soon to start your Agape for the May 4 — 7 Kairos PCI #13 at Pasquotank County Correctional Center. The purpose of Kairos is to build strong Christian communities inside prison walls. It begins with a three-day short course in Christianity and continues with small share and prayer groups amoung the residents of the institution. The following Agape information will help guide you as you get Agape ready.

KAIROS CHILDREN’S AGAPE

Children’s agape is greatly valued by prison residents. However, there are a few rules we must follow.
  1. Construction paper folded with hand drawn pictures and notes or Bible verses in crayon, markers or colored pencils are GREAT.
  2. No tape, stickers or glue can be given to the residents.
  3. Please have children sign first names and age only. Please don’t put church names on the note.
  4. Do not put cards into sealed envelopes.
  5. Unlike adult agape, children’s letters do not need to be alike or be in groups of 42.

KAIROS ADULT AGAPE

  1. Cookies: See special instructions below for the chocolate chip cookies.
  2. Green Agape: money for Kairos is separate from Emmaus. If you would like to make a donation to Kairos make your checks out to Kairos of North Carolina.
  3. Prayers: Please sign one of the “praying for you” chain links. These links are made into a chain and put together on the weekend and placed around the talk room for the residents. Prayer chain sign up sheets will be available at the next gathering.
  4. Written Agape: Anyone wishing to hand write agape must follow all Kairos and Pasquotank Correctional Institution guidelines or the Agape cannot be forwarded to the residents.
a.   no book markers, pens, pencils, machine printed materials, stickers or anything with glue can be used for Agape
b. All 42 residents must receive the same agape
c.   42 notes, letters, or words of encouragement are to be submitted on exactly the same note cards, postcards or stationary. The same ink pen must be used for each piece of Agape. The note may not vary in content.
d.   Place the handwritten Agape in an unsealed envelope.
e.   Please allow the Lord to form your letter. We ask that you not write to them about their crime or sentencing but focus on the Christian message of God’s love.

COOKIES

We distribute 2,000 dozen chocolate chip cookies giving a dozen to every resident and staff member during the three-day weekend. These homemade cookies are a tangible and vital expression of Christ's love and witness from the outside Christian community.
Important Cookie Specifications:
  1. Bake ONLY sturdy Chocolate Chip Cookies.
  2. DO NOT add fruit, nuts, or coating of ANY KIND to the cookies. Make only plain cookies.
  3. Size: two to two and-a-half (2 - 2 1/2 ) inches in diameter. Thin, crisp cookies break easily and cannot be used.
  4. Allow cookies to COOL COMPLETELY before bagging. Warm cookies will stick together and cannot be used.
  5. Bag cookies in clear zip-lock freezer bags, a dozen per bag. One-quart bags are the best size to use.
  6. Pack bags in sturdy boxes such as shoe box or copy paper box so they will survive the trip to prison.
  7. Cookies can be given to any Karios team member.

Don’t forget, our Gatherings do not end with the prayer following communion. After communion we sing “All in All” (on page 5 in the AE Song Book) followed by the Chrysalis Cheer. Then we all pitch in to help clean up. It only takes a dozen people a few minutes but the same job can take two people several hours.
