“Here I Am, Send Me”
July 13 — 16, 2005
at Chowan University, Murfreesboro, NC
Lay Directors:
Youth: Buffy White & Barret Gibson
Adult: Bonnie Strawser & Mike Rowe
Saturday evening Candle light, weather permitting, will be outside at Chowan University using real candles which will be handed out at candle light.
Bring your Emmaus battery candles only for small children and as a back up should wind/weather prevent the use of real candles.
Please do not bring any brightly colored flashing lights.
We currently have 9 male and 22 female caterpillar applications.
Please note, that while we have room for more male caterpillars you should continue to send in applications for female caterpillars.
There are almost always some who can not attend leaving room for others who can.
And, remember that the May deadline for Chrysalis caterpillars was for first consideration, others will be contacted until all available the spaces are filled.
However, always qualify your caterpillars; don’t send someone just to fill a space.
What is Chrysalis?
Chrysalis weekends are for young people who want to grow in their relationship with Christ.
Chrysalis is a youthful version of a Walk to Emmaus for high school sophomores,
juniors and seniors (age 15 to 19) essentially like an Emmaus weekend,
but designed to meet the needs of high school students.
If you would like to participate in Chrysalis, after your own Emmaus or Chrysalis weekend
you can sponsor others on a Chrysalis. Prayerfully consider sponsorship.
Another way to participate in Chrysalis is to work as a team member.
Chrysalis teams are made up of both adults and young people working together for a successful Flight.
Community Prayer Concerns are listed so the community might PRAY, not so we can pry.

What Is Candlelight?
Emmaus weekend candlelight services were designed to be reverent and beautiful worshipful bringing the light of Christ to the pilgrims on a walk. That's why, prior to candlelight, we have a worship service of music, prayer, and communion. However, over the years our joy and enthusiasm about a walk and for Pilgrims on a walk has turned candlelight services into an exuberant celebration that is a lot of fun for the community, but tends to draw attention to individuals in the community rather than focus on Christ. We need to get back to the basics using only white light candles. No colors or flashing lights. Come with hearts prepared to show the light of Christ, with candles held high, and let our smiles and “I love you” sign show the pilgrims the overwhelming beauty of God’s love.
Save those bright colors, costumes, and flashing lights for Sunday morning when we observe “Sonrise Celebration.”

Please Help Keep Our Vigils Moving
Please help keep prayer vigil sign-up moving throughout the entire gathering.
A frequent complaint is that a prayer vigil sign-up sheet never makes it to some of the people at a gathering.
It is possible to keep vigil clipboards moving during the Fourth Day talk without distracting from the talk.
If we can keep the sign-up moving everyone will have a chance to pray when they are available to pray.
And please remember to print. We cannot publish what we cannot read.
Moving?
Planning a move any time soon?
Please keep Albemarle Emmaus informed as you plan your move.
It saves us time, saves us energy and saves us money if you give us prompt notification of your address change.
To notify us of address changes in writing send a note to P.O. Box 1198, Edenton, NC 27932 or by calling newsletter editor Philip S. Ruckle Jr. at home (252) 473-1301.

Stuff to keep you safe from harm!
PERSONAL COMPUTER SECURITY BETTER, BUT NOT GREAT
Computer viruses have been with us for more than a dozen years now.
A study has found that the growth of malicious codes has
slowed and fewer computers than last year have a virus or
spyware. However, as with many things improvement can be relative; there are still many that have problems.
An
America Online and
National Cyber Security Alliance
study of 354 computers revealed that percent of computers were compromised by
spyware, compared to 80 percent a year ago. Those that had active
viruses fell from 19 to 12 percent.
The study also found that 80 percent lacked an important piece of
security. That includes anti-spyware or anti-virus software, or a
firewall. Others, although misconfigured, had protective software.
Running computers on the Internet is like driving the Interstate blindfolded.
You can make it safely where you are going, but the odds are against you.
It is senseless to leave yourself open to risk. Protective software is available,
and most of it is free. Check:

Don't worry, be happy - 20 PC myths
The world can be a scary place, and for many of us technology is at the top of the heap.
Many of us cannot turn on a PC without being violated by viruses,
spanked by spyware or conned by criminals. Now, if that doesn't put you off, we need to worry
about sneaky sites and cyber-snoops. Or do we? If you look a little deeper you will find that a lot of PC paranoia going around isn't worth
the time requested to worry about. Some dangers are exaggerated or
based on outdated technology.
Here are some PC warnings that in reality
are not scary at all and in some cases are not even true.
For the list of 20 pieces of PC paranoia that
just aren't worth worrying about visit
www.windowsxpmagazine.co.uk/features/features/dont_worry,_be_happy_-_20_pc_myths
1 A virus could wipe your hard disk
The overwhelming majority of viruses do not actually destroy data:
they use your computer to make copies of themselves, which are then
sent on to others via your email program. Destructive viruses tend to
target websites rather than individual home PCs, although that
doesn't mean it's safe to go online without up-to-date virus protection.
6
Cookies track everything you do online
Not really. Cookies are little text files placed in your Cookies folder by websites
that enable sites to recognize you when you return to that site.
Cookies are usually harmless. For example, online shops use them to say
“Welcome back! We have new recommendations for you!”
However, while cookies may not be spying on you, they can be a security risk.
Because cookies are just text files they can be opened in any text editor;
they also remain on your PC and enable people to see which sites you've
been visiting, even if you've cleared Internet Explorer's History. That
means it's a good idea to adjust Internet Explorer's privacy settings in
Tools > Internet Options so that it only stores the cookies you actually want.
11
Spyware transmits all your personal data to evil companies
`Spyware’ suggests companies are recording everything you do and storing
the information in a giant database for some nefarious purpose. However,
most spyware is very simple and tends to be used to serve up advertising.
For example, one of the most prevalent bits of spyware is CoolWebSearch,
a browser hijacker, edits your browser home page and search settings to take you to
sites you did not select. It's irritating and hard to get rid of, but it isn't scanning
your PC for secret world domination plans.
In most cases spyware acts like a spy to get into your PC, but doesn't do
any actual spying when it's there. The real nasties won't announce
themselves by changing your browser settings or blasting you with adverts.
Keyloggers are among the worst, designed to record everything you do on
the keyboard, but loggers are typically installed by individuals rather
than companies, and they're easily blocked by anti-virus programs.
13
“IP address has been logged on 30 illegal sites: your PC is infected”
Unscrupulous software sellers use pop-up adverts that have been designed
to look like Windows XP system messages, and they hope you'll click them
and visit their website.
The only messages of this kind you should take notice of are the ones that
come from security software you've actually installed on your PC, and
those messages will tell you exactly what you're dealing with.
For example, if you're using Microsoft's AntiSpyware, it'll tell you it's
detected a particular program and ask what you want to do next.
Of course, if you've been browsing some shady sites in the dark corners of the
internet then it's quite possible that your address has been logged, and
that your PC is infected with spyware, but these pop-ups have no way of
knowing that. They're trying to scare you into buying products, and any
firm that uses such underhanded sales techniques doesn't deserve your trust
or your business.
The majority of security software programs include pop-up blocking
programs that can put a stop to these annoying messages and others
that say your system needs to be optimized, or that your net connection
needs to be tweaked – from appearing.
17
Windows XP has big security holes where hackers can hide
All software suffers from the occasional security problem, because it's
impossible to predict what virus writers might do. However, most problems
take advantage of bugs or security holes that are ancient, and in most
cases the problems were fixed a long time ago.
When you hear about a worm causing chaos, it's likely that the PCs it's
infected haven't been patched for ages. For example, there are still
emails containing the mydoom virus, but the vulnerability that mydoom
exploits was patched over a year ago. If you use Windows Update to
download the latest security patches and use updated security software to
stop nasties, there's no need to worry.
18
Criminals can get your credit card details when you shop online
It's possible, but it's much easier to copy your card in a real shop,
petrol station or restaurant. If you're dealing with a reputable online
site and Internet Explorer displays the padlock to show that it's secure,
you're fine – and your credit card company will protect you if anything
goes wrong. The exception is when you hand over your card details to a
fake site, which is why you should never trust emails that claim to be
from your bank, from PayPal or from eBay, and which ask you to confirm
your card details. They're cons, and while the sites they link to look and
work like the real thing, they're elaborate fakes that have been designed
to do one thing and one thing only: steal your account details. If you're
defrauded in this way, you might find that your bank or credit card
company won't pay you any compensation.

Celebrate 30 Years of Kairos!
It’s Kairos Summer Conference time for 2006!
Kairos of New Mexico invites you to come be a part of what we are doing here in the beautiful mountains of northern New Mexico at LifeWay Glorieta Conference Center.
The 2006 Summer Conference dates are
Tuesday, July 25 through Sunday, July 30
Come join us as we explore wonderful opportunities to learn as well as get acquainted with Kairos volunteers we have known throughout the years or those we are meeting for the first time.
Lifeway Glorieta Conference Center
This year’s conference will be held on the campus of LifeWay Glorieta Conference Center. As the Rocky Mountains stretch their way into northern New Mexico, they form the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, which boasts elevations well over 10,000 feet. Nestled within these amazing mountains, just 20 miles east of Santa Fe, rests the beautiful LifeWay Glorieta Conference Center.
Glorieta offers over 2,200 acres of natural beauty with lodging, meeting and dining facilities to accommodate up to 2,000 guests. The campus provides an abundance of recreational options including horseback riding, tennis, basketball, softball, and volleyball, as well as some of the most beautiful mountain hiking trails in the country. Nearby Santa Fe, New Mexico is rich with native American and early Spanish culture, offering guests incredible sightseeing opportunities, as well as fine dining and shopping.
What is the Kairos Summer Conference?
The Kairos Prison Ministry International Summer Conference is sharing, learning, and business. We have attendees from all over the world, including South Africa, Australia, England, Costa Rica, and Canada. Anyone who has attended can tell you about the fun and learning that goes with Conference.
We open the 2006 International Summer Conference with committee meetings all day on Wednesday, July 26, 2006. The Kairos Board of Directors will meet all day on Thursday, July 27, 2006. Persons planning on attending any committee meeting or the board meeting should arrive no later than the evening of Tuesday, July 25, 2006. New Board Member Orientation will be held on Tuesday evening after dinner.
The 2006 International Summer Conference officially opens at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2006. Both Friday and Saturday are devoted to workshops and sessions, designed to provide insights and to strengthen and build the skills of our volunteers. Some of our workshop topics this summer include the history of Kairos, building spirituality on a weekend, identifying and developing team leaders, team formation, music in Kairos, fundraising, web sites, Kairos Outside, Torch, and question and answer forums. Friday evening offers a devotional and a memorial to Kairos volunteers. At the Saturday dinner banquet we will celebrate 30 years of Kairos - our 30th anniversary!
We will also be learning about the Ezra computer program, which includes everything from agape to “ZZZZZZZ” (or lack of when working a weekend!!) Ezra covers all steps of a Kairos weekend, from planning and forming a team to the creation of a database of your volunteers that serve on your team.
Some of the workshops tentatively scheduled are:
