Sponsor Tips

If you are not sure what a sponsor does, review these Sponsorship Tips:
  1. Pray for the person's openness to God's call to discipleship . . . not for how to get them on a walk.
  2. Make an appointment to visit with the person or couple to discuss the possibility of them attending a walk.
  3. Extend an invitation. Invite them to attend a weekend for a more vital relationship with Jesus Christ . . . an Emmaus Weekend is not just a weekend retreat or getaway.
  4. Share YOUR faith and explain the basic elements of a walk . . . its purpose and how it helps us live in a life of grace for the rest of our lives. Have the attitude that you are giving them a wonderful gift rather than that they need to go.
  5. Answer questions honestly . . . Emmaus is not a secret organization. You do not have to explain everything, but you do want to explain about what they want to know.
  6. Ask them to make a commitment by filling out the application form. If the person is married, speak with both partners and encourage an equal commitment by both spouses.
  7. Continue to pray . . . and when they agree to go, and are accepted for a weekend, prepare agape letters and enlist support of their pastor and family to collect personal agape letters.

Comments from Our Community Lay Director

angel
It has been a true pleasure for me to have served as your Albemarle Emmaus community lay director this past year and I appreciate the support I have had from the AE Board of Directors and the community.
As we begin a new business year we should not sit back and rest on our past accomplishments. There are more people to sponsor and more walks to team on. I encourage everyone to team at least once, attend gatherings, be part of a reunion group, and keep your prayer life in order.
I hope to see each of you at the next Gathering.

Mike Rowe

PLAY IT SAFE:

A survey once revealed that:
Automobiles are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.
17% of all accidents occur in the home.
14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians walking on streets or sidewalks.
16% of all accidents involve traveling by air, rail, or water.

You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders.

Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place to be at any given point in time is at Church! Bible study is safe, too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less.

So, for safety's sake . . . Attend Church and Read Your Bible . . .

          IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!!

Important Board Notes:

Each year our local Board signs a covenant agreement with Emmaus International to, among other things, follow a Model Plan for The Walk to Emmaus Weekend. Following the plan helps ensure uniformity between Emmaus Communities.

Also, by following the Model every community hosting a Walk can expect the same predictable results and blessings as any other community. Lives will be changed in similar ways by similar Walk to Emmaus weekends all over the world.
Each Community is allowed to have its own distinct flavor and/or identity. That is expected and allowed for by the Model.

However, in years past Albemarle Emmaus has unwittingly allowed activities that are not part of the Emmaus Model to be a part of our local walk weekends.

So, in keeping with our covenant with the Upper Room, AE has decided to discontinue Mananitas and Stations of the Cross as part future weekend schedules. The Model has another service that is expected to be as dynamic and powerful as Stations of the Cross, and the rest of us can sleep in a little later on Sunday mornings.
If you missed the June Gathering and detailed explanation behind these decisions, and want more information, please contact a Board member listed elsewhere in this newsletter. Lets deal with information and facts, not rumors.

Hey Delores!

I have lots of friends I want to send on an Emmaus weekend but I missed the Day of Deeper Understanding. How come a pilgrim cannot immediately sponsor others on a weekend?
heydelores.gif
Thanks for your question.

One specific problem is that new community members are not correctly informed and educated in the sponsorship process. Many new pilgrims have lots of zeal and enthusiasm to begin sponsoring others with reckless abandonment.

The aim of a sponsor should not be "to get all my friends to go," to fill up the weekend, to fix people's problems, or to reproduce one's own religious experience in others. Rather, the aim of the sponsor is to bring spiritual revitalization to Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and vision to the work of the church in the congregation, home, workplace, and community. The aim of sponsorship is to build up the body of Christ.

Attending a DoDU educates new community members in the responsibilities of sponsorship and all materials related in their Fourth Day Packets. Emmaus is not for everyone, and that is covered in a DoDU.

A Day of Deeper Understanding is provided for all Pilgrims and Caterpillars who have attended a Walk to Emmaus or a Chrysalis Flight. This training is designed to give you a "deeper understanding" of the purpose and structure of the Walk to Emmaus Movement as well as sponsorship requirements.

Check our Calendar of Events for the next DoDU, we scheduled them right after each walk/flight weekend.

I hope this helps.
