Annual Albemarle Emmaus Community Picnic
campers

Our Annual Community Picnic & Gathering will be Saturday, September 23rd, at Cale Retreat and Conference Center on the Perquimans River near Hertford.

Activities begin at 1:00 pm, dinner will be approximately 5:30pm.

This year Camp Cale has offered the use of their facility without an admission fee. This is an opportunity for everyone in the community to attend and tour the grounds. An offering will be taken later in the evening to cover our usual expenses and we will ask for a donation to Cale Retreat.
This year we will be cooking 2 pigs . . . . Ice and paper products will be provided as well as some iced tea and lemonaide. Community members are reminded to please bring a large bottled drink, your favorite side dishes and desserts to go with pork BBQ.

We will have games, special live music, a rock wall, swimming (with life guard), boating, canoeing, volley ball and a play ground for kids. Kids can fish (not in the swimming area). Expect lots of fellowship, lots of FUN, and Communion.

Come join in the fun  . . .  you'll need to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, and remember to volunteer to help set up or clean up.

Comments from AE 69...
We are in the midst of teaming and we expect the Holy Spirit to be at our locations before we arrive and thus far we have not been disappointed. We encourage the community to fill the Prayer Vigil and don't wait until the weekend to pray - please pray now for the Pilgrims, their sponsors and the team. We know the power of prayer on these Emmaus weekends so let your agape be prayer and lots of it.

As LD for AE 69, I am thankful for the team God formed and know our pilgrims will be blessed immeasurably!

Candlelight Services Notes

It is important to remember that Candlelight Services are reverent services on every Walk Weekend. Surely we are all excited to see our Pilgrim, but the reason we are at a Candlelight Service is to share God's love with every pilgrim. With that in mind, here are some common questions with answers that, hopefully, will help keep every Candlelight Services the reverent service is intended to be.
  1. Why are we asked to not touch the pilgrims?
Logistically speaking it is not possible - there are 42 Pilgrims and more than 400 community members at a Candlelight . . . if everybody tried to touch everybody . . . WHEW, just imagine! Nothing else would get done.

  2. Why are asked to only use light up candles and not flashing lights and glow lights anymore?
Candlelight is a reverent service designed by Upper Room Emmaus as a way for the Pilgrims to see the face of Jesus in the community. Jesus was the Light of the World and a simple battery operated candle conveys this most appropriately. Flashing lights do not spread the light, they draw attention.

  3. Where do I get a simple battery operated candle?
Each pilgrim attending a Walk to Emmaus in the Albemarle Emmaus community (after AE48) has received a battery operated candle. Others similar candles or lights can be purchased at many church supply stores like Cokesbury or online. Now is a great time to find battery operated lights if you do not already have one. Christmas is approaching and stores are stocking up (food for thought).

  4. Are there things we need to know to make Candlelight services most effective that perhaps we do not know?
Please remember to come for the Gathering, not just Candlelight - we are a community and supporting a 4th day speaker and sharing Communion together is a great way to bond with Christ's church in fellowship. Also remember logistical directions are not designed to take away from your personal experience but they are designed to maximize safety and effectiveness. At the close of a Candlelight service we respectfully ask that you remain inside the facility until the bus has had time to depart. Please come early enough to sign placemats and above all come with a desire to welcome the Holy Spirit to shine forth from you and inhabit the hearts of all in attendance.
Just remember that Candlelight is about Pilgrims seeing Jesus, not seeing us act foolish or single ourselves out.

The Dinner Table

And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them. Luke 22:19

In our modern society, with frantic schedules, fast-food restaurants, and microwave ovens, family members frequently “catch a meal” whenever and wherever they can, eating it “on the run”.   Nevertheless, when we reflect upon the good times we have shared with family members, our memories often settle upon family meals - not necessarily holiday feasts, but daily family dinner conversation. When we sit at a table with one another, we not only share food, but our lives.
An anonymous writer wrote this…perhaps it’s time we re-establish this practice in our lives!

“The table is really the family altar! Members of all ages come together and help to sustain both their physical and their spiritual existence. If a sacrament is “an actual conveyance of spiritual meaning and power by a material process,” then a family meal can be a sacrament. It entwines the material and the spiritual in a remarkable way. The food, in and of itself, is purely physical, but it represents human service in its use. Here, at one common table, is the father who has earned, the mother who has prepared or planned, and the children who share, according to need, whatever their antecedent participation may have been.”

When we realize how deeply a meal together can be a spiritual and regenerating experience, we can understand something of why our Lord, when He broke bread with His company toward the end of their earthly fellowship, told them, as often as they did it, to remember Him. We, too, seek to be members of His sacred fellowship, and irrespective of what we do, there is no reason why each family meal should not take on something of the character of a time of memory and hope.
It’s now time for our Emmaus family to share a meal together. I pray that each and every one of you will take the time to come to the Emmaus Family Picnic on September 23rd. There will be lots of physical food, fellowship, music, and a time for spiritual renewal. I plan to see you there!

Looking For Agape Bag Fabric

Anyone with agape bag fabric from a Gathering or from Marcia Danchise to make cloth agape bags is asked to please contact one of the addresses listed below. If you have fabric and have not had chance to sew, that is NOT a problem. We misplaced our list of who has what and we would like to keep track of where the fabric went. Specifically we'd love to know if you have some multi-colored camouflage material.

Sponsor Tips
If you are not sure what a sponsor does, review these Sponsorship Tips:
  1. Pray for the person's openness to God's call to discipleship . . . not for how to get them on a walk.
  2. Make an appointment to visit with the person or couple to discuss the possibility of them attending a walk.
  3. Extend an invitation. Invite them to attend a weekend for a more vital relationship with Jesus Christ . . . an Emmaus Weekend is not just a weekend retreat or getaway.
  4. Share YOUR faith and explain the basic elements of a walk . . . its purpose and how it helps us live in a life of grace for the rest of our lives. Have the attitude that you are giving them a wonderful gift rather than that they need to go.
  5. Answer questions honestly . . . Emmaus is not a secret organization. You do not have to explain everything, but you do want to explain about what they want to know.
  6. Ask them to make a commitment by filling out the application form. If the person is married, speak with both partners and encourage an equal commitment by both spouses.
  7. Continue to pray . . . and when they agree to go, and are accepted for a weekend, prepare agape letters and enlist support of their pastor and family to collect personal agape letters.

KAIROS
It's not too soon to start your Agape for the November 2 - 5 Kairos PCI #14 weekend at Pasquotank County Correctional Center. Kairos is a program building strong Christian communities inside prison walls. It begins with a three-day short course in Christianity (similar to Emmaus Weekends) and continues with small share and prayer groups among the residents of the institution.

The following Agape information will help guide you as you get Agape ready.

KAIROS CHILDREN’S AGAPE

Children’s agape is greatly valued by prison residents. However, there are a few rules we must follow.
  1. Construction paper folded with hand drawn pictures and notes or Bible verses in crayon, markers or colored pencils are GREAT.
  2. No tape, stickers or glue can be given to the residents.
  3. Please have children sign first names and age only. Please don’t put church names on the note.
  4. Do not put cards into sealed envelopes.
  5. Unlike adult agape, children’s letters do not need to be alike or be in groups of 42.

KAIROS ADULT AGAPE

  1. Cookies: See special instructions below for the chocolate chip cookies.
  2. Green Agape: money for Kairos is separate from Emmaus. If you would like to make a donation to Kairos make your checks out to Kairos of North Carolina.
  3. Prayers: Please sign one of the “praying for you” chain links. These links are made into a chain and put together on the weekend and placed around the talk room for the residents. Prayer chain sign up sheets will be available at the next gathering.
  4. Written Agape: Anyone wishing to hand write agape must follow all Kairos and Pasquotank Correctional Institution guidelines or the Agape cannot be forwarded to the residents.
a.   no book markers, pens, pencils, machine printed materials, stickers or anything with glue can be used for Agape
b. All 42 residents must receive the same agape
c.   42 notes, letters, or words of encouragement are to be submitted on exactly the same note cards, postcards or stationary. The same ink pen must be used for each piece of Agape. The note may not vary in content.
d.   Place the handwritten Agape in an unsealed envelope.
e.   Please allow the Lord to form your letter. We ask that you not write to them about their crime or sentencing but focus on the Christian message of God’s love.

COOKIES

We distribute 2,000 dozen chocolate chip cookies giving a dozen to every resident and staff member during the three-day weekend. These homemade cookies are a tangible and vital expression of Christ's love and witness from the outside Christian community.
Important Cookie Specifications:
  1. Bake ONLY sturdy Chocolate Chip Cookies.
  2. DO NOT add fruit, nuts, or coating of ANY KIND to the cookies. Make only plain cookies.
  3. Size: two to two and-a-half (2 - 2 1/2 ) inches in diameter. Thin, crisp cookies break easily and cannot be used.
  4. Allow cookies to COOL COMPLETELY before bagging. Warm cookies will stick together and cannot be used.
  5. Bag cookies in clear zip-lock freezer bags, a dozen per bag. One-quart bags are the best size to use.
  6. Pack bags in sturdy boxes such as shoe box or copy paper box so they will survive the trip to prison.
  7. Cookies can be given to any Karios team member.
