The purpose of Kairos is to build strong Christian communities inside prison walls. It begins with a three-day short course in Christianity and continues with small share and prayer groups among the residents of the institution. The following Agape information will help guide you as you get Agape ready for the May 3 — 6 Kairos PCI #15 weekend at Pasquotank County Correctional Center.

KAIROS CHILDREN’S AGAPE

Children’s agape is greatly valued by prison residents. However, there are a few rules we must follow.
  1. Construction paper folded with hand drawn pictures and notes or Bible verses in crayon, markers or colored pencils are GREAT.
  2. No tape, stickers or glue can be given to the residents.
  3. Please have children sign first names and age only. Please don’t put church names on the note.
  4. Do not put cards into sealed envelopes.
  5. Unlike adult agape, children’s letters do not need to be alike or be in groups of 42.

KAIROS ADULT AGAPE

  1. Cookies: See last month’s newsletter and below for chocolate chip cookies instructions.
  2. Green Agape: Money for Kairos is separate from Emmaus. If you would like to make a donation to Kairos make your checks out to Kairos of North Carolina.
  3. Prayers: Please sign one of the “praying for you” chain links. These links are made into a chain and put together on the weekend and placed around the talk room for the residents. Prayer chain sign up sheets are available at gatherings or from the Kairos team.
  4. Written Agape: Anyone wishing to hand write agape must follow all Kairos and Pasquotank Correctional Institution guidelines or the Agape cannot be forwarded to the residents.
    a.   no book markers, pens, pencils, machine printed materials, stickers or anything with glue can be used for Agape
    b. All 42 residents must receive the same agape
    c.   Your 42 notes, letters, or words of encouragement are to be submitted on exactly the same note cards, postcards or stationary. The same ink pen must be used for each piece of Agape. The note may not vary in content.
    d.   Place the handwritten Agape in an unsealed envelope.
    e.   Please allow the Lord to form your letter. We ask that you not write to them about their crime or sentencing but focus on the Christian message of God’s love.

If your cookies are ready before the PCI-15 weekend, bring them to the following churches Wednesday, May 2nd, and someone on the team will get them to the PCI-15 weekend. Or, contact any one of the 80 PCI-15 team members listed below.

Don’t forget that our Gatherings do not end with the prayer following communion. After communion we sing “All in All” (on page 5 in the AE Song Book) followed by the Chrysalis Cheer. Then we all pitch in to help clean up. It only takes a dozen people a few minutes but the same job can take two people several hours.

Keep Our Children Safe

As breaking news reports came today from Virginia Tech regarding the shootings that took place there, my thoughts turned to what parents would call their worst nightmare . . . the innocent loss of a child. I know many of you too, are parents of college students. We pray for their safety on the road to and from the school/university. We pray that they will have the willpower to study and to do well. We pray that they will not be introduced to illegal substances. The list goes on. We have them for what seems to be such a short time before we push them out of the nest to further their education. We can only hope and pray that we have given them all the tools they need to meet the world. What comes next? CHOICES! They are pretty much on their own to make the right choices.

What bothers me most about the Virginia Tech Massacre is that those students did not make the choice to be gunned down. Those students awoke to another day of classes, making choices regarding their education at Virginia Tech. and their future plans. Then 32 lives were taken at the hand of a gunman. This alone is an example of how fragile life really is. Those students have mothers, fathers, grandparents, etc. My heart goes out to all of these families as they face this terrible tragedy.

Please join me in prayer for these families in the innocent loss of their children. We pray that God will comfort them in a mighty way. We also pray our children will be safe and protected in the palm of His hand.
