What a wonderful time and season of the year. Thanksgiving allows us to share our love and thanks for the bounty we have received, followed by the celebration of the birth of Jesus. And, just as the North Pole is a buzz with Santa's preparations, God and His teams have begun their work in preparation for Chrysalis Flight AC 30 and Albemarle Emmaus Walk 75.
God's work never stops and He also is busy molding and building teams for AE 76 and 77. He has a plan and He is on a Mission!
On a less joyful note, it was reported during a recent visit from the National Board of the Upper Room of Emmaus that the number of Pilgrims and Butterflies being sponsored for walks and flights are down all across the United States, primarily due to the increased cost of accommodations. That trend is surfacing here in the AE community as well.
In 2007 we had to raise teaming and sponsoring fees to cover the increase cost of accommodations at the 4-H Center. This is causing financial hardships for many, especially in sponsoring, and has lowered our pilgrim and butterfly application numbers as well.
    We cannot give-up!
We must continue to pray for God's direction as we consider sponsoring our friends and neighbors. Perhaps this is the time for us to get creative. One creative way is to share and partner sponsoring and teaming cost with others. At Riverside UMC, we all share in the cost each time we have someone being sponsored for a walk or flight. I know other churches and reunion groups do the same.
Please remember that through Prayer that God will guide and direct each and every one of us!
Love & Prayers to you all! decolores

Albemarle Chrysalis
Scholarship Fund

The current economy, increased team fees and other outside factors have resulted in a number of individuals in the community that have the time but not the financial resources to be able to team a Chrysalis weekend. To meet this need the Albemarle Chrysalis and Albemarle Emmaus Boards would like to establish a scholarship fund to help qualified team members meet the financial obligations necessary to team a Chrysalis weekend. If you would like to help, we ask that you prayerfully consider donating to a Chrysalis Scholarship Fund that would allow qualified youth or occasional adult an opportunity to team who might not otherwise be able to participate. Send your contributions to Albemarle Chrysalis, Post Office Box 2707, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Bertie Kairos April 3-6, 2008

Our first Kairos weekend at Bertie Correctional is just around the corner.

God has answered many prayers and allowed Kairos to schedule a first weekend at BCI in Windsor, NC, April 3 — 6, 2008. This is truly a giant step of faith. Now we need prayer, volunteers, money for equipment, prayer, cookies, and lots of prayer.

Anyone interested in helping with this new Kairos program is encouraged to please Email Rod Mumma at or call Rod at (252) 337-4120. A Bertie Kairos Team Application has been added to the Albemarle Emmaus web site Application page which can be downloaded, printed, filled out and mailed to Rod Mumma.

Kairos at BCI will need a lot of support from the Emmaus community to make things happen, so please respond when God tugs at your heart. Women need not feel left out because women are needed for the outside support team as well as men to enter the prison. If you have never tried Kairos, now is the time to think about getting out of your comfort zone and trust His grace to help you serve inside the wire.

HELP WANTED:

We still have two volunteer openings. One opening is for an AGAPE CHAIRPERSON and the second one is for a MUSIC LEADER. There is no experience is necessary, althoug as music skills would be helpful to anyone as Music Leader. As AGAPE CHAIRPERSON you do not have to create all the AGAPE yourself. We need someone to assist in the overall co-ordination and collection of Agape items for each Albemarle Emmaus Walk. However, having excellent people skills, having a strong prayer life and being reasonably organized is more important than being creative. Our goal is to promote and enhance the Quality of Life and Spiritual Position of our Pilgrims and their families. If interested, please contact Mike Twiddy, any Board Member, or send a note to AE at P.O. Box 1198, Edenton, NC 27932.

  1. First, begin praying now for both walks. Pray for each team member, all pilgrims, the sponsors etc. And it’s never too soon to pray for any other weekends.
  2. Sponsors should have personal letters for a Pilgrim from those most special to that Pilgrim. Keep in mind the quantity of letters is not important - nobody really needs 100 personal letters - what is more important is that you know them well enough to get letters on their behalf from the people that will be most meaningful for them. Agape servants put only 12-15 Personal letters in the cloth Agape Bags.
  3. To insure that Pilgrims get those most special letters please do NOT put a "P" in the upper right corner unless their Sponsor asks you to. A Pilgrim will still get your letter - it just will be at a different time.
  4. Remember to sort Agape A L P H A B E T I C A L L Y.
  5. Agape letters need first and last names on each envelope - not your name & not nicknames. Please remember that there will probably be at least 25 other pilgrims that will also be “Momma” or “Daddy” just as there might be two or more “John” or “Sue” Pilgrims. Having a Pilgrim’s letter with their first and last name helps that letter make it to the right person on time. It also helps at sorting time if all are labeled correctly.
  6. Separate personal from general Agape - put a “P” in the right hand corner of personal letters or separate them in bags or bundles and make sure they are clearly labeled.
  7. It also makes it fool-proof to sort if all envelopes are labeled in the same location and the same way; clearly, neatly & correctly. As always it is a good idea for everyone to P-R-I-N-T neatly because we cannot process what we cannot read.
  8. Nothing bigger than 4-1/2 X 6 inches will be given to a Pilgrim unless there is one for every Pilgrim. Only letter sized envelopes will fit in the cloth Agape bags.
  9. Upper Room Emmaus guidelines determine when letters are distributed so please do not include “Friday” or “Saturday” or “Sunday” as any part of an Agape label. If you want to request that it be given at a particular time please include it in a bag labeled that way.
  10. NO GIFTS   —   Please! Any wrapped gifts and gift bags will be given back to sponsors at Send-off. Please save any gifts you have for Pilgrims for their 4th day.
  11. In keeping with the National Upper Room Emmaus guidelines we no longer encourage team agape on the weekends.
  12. Also, as community, we DO NOT touch or hug pilgrims or team members during the walk weekend.
We are truly blessed with such a loving and caring community - let’s just remember that these guidelines are in place to aid in the logistics of a pleasant weekend and to enhance each individual Pilgrim’s experience.

AGAPE NOTES
agape image
Placemats are just one form of Agape that we use on every Chrysalis and Emmaus weekend and we use a lot of them. Our community uses about 550 decorated placemats each walk weekend — that’s 2750 each year just for the Emmaus Walks. We use another 650 each Chrysalis Flight. That’s about 3,500 placemats a year without even thinking about what is used each Kairos weekends.

That’s a lot of work for one person in anybody’s book.

English Playwright and Poet John Heywood once said “Many hands make light work.” With that in mind, if only 100 people in the community each prepared 40 place mats there would be more than enough placemats for what the community uses each year. We have had more than 2600 Pilgrims attend an Albemarle Community weekend in addition to all the Chrysalis Butterflies so there should not be a shortage of people to share the load.

If you would like to prepare some placemats, patterns are available on our web site. As a remember:

check mark PLEASE Make at least 36 of any pattern you make
check mark PLEASE MAKE ALL Placemats generic so they can be used on any walk
check mark PLEASE DO NOT put individual names on any placemats
check mark PLEASE DO NOT put Walk Numbers on placemats
check mark PLEASE DO NOT put themes or theme names on placemats
check mark PLEASE DO NOT put DeColores and Good Morning together on placemats

If you would like to make placemats for a certain walk, please contact the Agape Coordinator for that walk to make sure they know what you are doing, and deliver those placemats before the walk. Failing to follow these guidelines could result in producing placemats that cannot be used.
