New Mailing Address

In an effort to trim unnecessary costs and increase efficiency the AE Board has decided to close our Edenton Post Office box and combine our community mailing address with Albemarle Chrysalis.

Effective April 1, 2008, all applications and other mail correspondence should be sent to:

Albemarle Emmaus/Chrysalis
Post Office Box 2707
Elizabeth City, NC 27909

By consolidating all correspondence into one address we eliminate the expense of one mail box and hope to make it easier on our volunteer staff to keep track of applications, expenses, and any other correspondence within both the Chrysalis and Emmaus communities.

We will continue to require that all applications be mailed. However, after April 1 any applications, team fees and pilgrim fees will need to be mailed to Elizabeth City and NOT to Edenton even though there are still applications out in the community with an Edenton address.

Please make a note of the news address.

Chrysalis News

In response to community interest the Albemarle Chrysalis Board is considering the possibility of a summer Flight.   In order for a Flight to take place there must be enough Team & Caterpillar applications submitted early enough to justify a flight and to work out the necessary logistical details.   The Board asks that you PRAY about this event and submit your applications. We hope to have more information at the next Gathering.

angel       Community Lay Director Comments       angel

Gossiping is everywhere, including our Albemarle Emmaus Community. As your Community Lay Director, and speaking on behalf of the AE Board of Directors, I will confirm that there is some truth behind some new changes on the horizon. As I do so I solicit your prayers for the AE Community and your AE Board.

The Walk to Emmaus is a Christian outreach program operating through the Upper Room. The Upper Room charters communities to run a Walk to Emmaus weekend retaining oversight of the Walks through Regional Representatives. Annually each Emmaus Community’s Board is required to sign and submit a Letter of Agreement (LOA) to the Upper Room that renews its Charter. Doing so allows them to continue operating as an Emmaus Community conducting Emmaus walks. Within the LOA are the guidelines that each Board agrees to as part of operating their Emmaus Walks.

In 2005 the Albemarle Community under the guidance of the Board, enacted several changes to our weekend walks to comply with Upper Room requirements. In the fall of 2007, Regional Upper Room Representatives again contacted and met with our Board requesting yet additional Weekend Walk changes.

To be frank and direct with the community, the Board does not understand some of these requested and does not agree with some changes to our weekend walks procedures, putting the Board in a compromising position on signing the Upper Room’s LOA to renew our Emmaus Charter.

I sincerely tell you that the Board membership is taking this very seriously, but we do not have a quick answer or resolution that we can give the Community. Our actions thus far have included:

  1. additional special board meetings specific to this issue;
  2. extended communications with the Upper Room; and
  3. we have engaged assistance and guidance from past experienced Community leadership as we work towards a resolution and forward direction for our Albemarle Community.
As I close, let me say that I am sure there will be some changes coming. We are working hard to minimize the changes to our Community to retain this special Christian bond and work for God that has been created. Please keep the AE Community and the AE Board membership in your prayers.

Please contact me or any board member for discussion. A list of Board members with contact information is included in this newsletter. I will keep you informed through the gatherings, newsletter and the AE website.

Sponsor AGAPE Notes
In preparation for AE 76 & AE 77 there are a few things that as Sponsors we should remember:
  •   Agape letters should have the Pilgrims first and last name on the envelope. Remember, there may be more than one Mary or one John. Remember to try to limit personal letters to a dozen or so; indicate them with a small "P" in the upper right hand corner of the envelope. This in no way limits the amount of letters you can collect for your pilgrim; just think of these as the MOST personal letters. Remember, your pilgrim will have other opportunities to receive letters and they will be every bit as meaningful.
  •   All Agape letters should be in alphabetical order - this is to make the large task of sorting all the letters for a weekend much more efficient.
  •   Sponsorship money is due upon notification that a pilgrim is going to attend a certain walk. Remember to use the Elizabeth City address after April 1 when mailing your money.

  •   Please no gift bags or wrapped gifts of any kind unless you are providing the same for all Pilgrims. Saving these types of things as a gift for the way home or anytime during their 4th day will be every bit as meaningful.
  •   Candlelight is a reverent ceremont and all about showing and sharing the love of Jesus with all Pilgrims - we want each Pilgrim to see Jesus in each one of us. Given this all important criteria, we are asked to simply carry a single candle (no bright lights or flashing lights, head gear etc.) and treat each pilgrim as if we are there just for them. We are asked not to "love on" or touch the pilgrims because we are there to show love to each one equally just as Christ does. Some pilgrims do not have a large family, or large circle of friends and we want them to feel the love of Jesus as well. Besides, think about it, if everyone had to touch and hug their Pilgrim, Candlelight would last a lifetime!
