AE Community:

Let me first say that it is my pleasure to announce to the Community that Christi Quance has been selected as the Community Lay Director for the 2008-2009 year beginning July 1, 2008. The other Board officers for this next year are Stuart Wescott as Assistant Community Lay Director, Mary Stoll will be our new Treasure, and Jessica Lynam will continue as Secretary to the Board.

I extend a “Community Thank You” to the retiring 4 board members — Bill Bailey, Ella Coates, Lynne Furlough and Andy Stoll. These 4 persons have truly been servants to this community through their time, talents and actions. Please welcome the new Board members — Vernon Lee, Howard Simpson, Jerri O’Shell and Dan Lynam. Second, I wish to make you aware that our Board has begun to request Emmaus & Chrysalis Clergy Applications from Community Clergy persons serving on walks, flights and on the community boards.

Clergy are critical elements in The Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis weekends. Both programs depend heavily on the partnership between laity and clergy. Recently, Upper Room Emmaus updated its clergy qualifications. As a result we are finding that some clergy in our community do not have all the proper credentials under the new guideline forcing our Emmaus and Chrysalis Boards to face difficult decisions regarding who can serve as a Spiritual Director. We have begun the process of creating a Community file of verified serving clergy, and to begin seeking some Upper Room Emmaus qualification status for our serving clergy. Clergy applications are available on the Albemarle Emmaus and Upper Room Emmaus websites. I ask for your prayers for Albemarle Emmaus as we begin working more closely with our Community Clergy in this area.

And finally, in a closing note, thank you for your trust in allowing me to serve as the AE Community Lay Director during the past 12 months.

Love and Prayers to all!

~~~   Mike Twiddy
Annual Albemarle Emmaus & Chrysalis Community Picnic
Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 30th, as we gather for our Annual Community Picnic. Activities are scheduled to begin about 2pm with dinner around 5:30pm. We will not have a speaker this year, just a great time visiting and enjoying all the activities planned for the afternoon. In order to pay for the use of the facilities and other event related expenses, we will need to collect $4 per person up to a maximum of $12 per family.
Community members should bring a favorite side dish and a dessert. We’ll grill the hamburgers and hot dogs. Ice, paper products and utensils will be provided as well as iced tea, water and lemonade. If you wish to have other beverages please feel to bring them.
We plan to have horseshoes, use of the volleyball court and related equipment; tether ball courts, basketball courts, and a paid lifeguard from 2pm until 5pm. Showers are not included in our price and may not be used.
Camp Cale has a new High Ropes Course which can be available that afternoon if there is enough interest. We need a minimum of 12 people to have this service. Cost for the High Ropes Course is $5 each person. Anyone interested in this activity should please let Christi Quance know before August 15th. You can call Christi at 252-337-4966 or .
This will be a great opportunity to gather and share with each other. Bring your lawn chair and join us for a great afternoon of fun and fellowship.
Converting Past Newsletters
Please note that in an effort to conserve web space on our server we are converting all past newsletters and many other informational pages to Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
The following information is included in the pdf Printable Version of this newlsetter but NOT in the paper copy mailed to the community.
HTML, the code behind most Web pages, cannot maintain all the original formatting and presentation of many documents on different operating systems. Since Adobe Systems introduced the PDF format in 1993 it has rapidly become the number one universal document format on the internet allowing almost anyone on any computer system to open a file and view it the way it was intended. PDF files are compatible across platforms such as Windows, Mac, Linux, and even modern mobile phones. Every popular web browser is capable of opening and viewing PDF files.
Some of the advantages of PDF files include a smaller file output. Because converted files are highly optimized they are smaller in size without losing any quality. Smaller files download faster. Another advantage is that they are safer to download. There is almost no chance of a PDF file getting infected with something like a virus or trojan, which makes it a safe and trusted way of sharing your work.
Software like Acrobat Reader to open PDF files can be downloaded for free, and is already installed on most computers. Often Acrobat Reader can be installed in combinations with other software bought on various prgram CD-Roms because many companies deliver product documentation as PDF files.
You can check for system requirements needed to run Acrobat Reader and then download the versions of Adobe Reader you need at:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html.
Other PDF readers include:
Foxit Reader – version 2.3 for Windows
eXPert PDF Reader – a free pdf viewer software that lets you view and print pdf documents on windows operating systems.
Drumlin PDF reader – a free viewer for Microsoft Windows, and Mac/Linux with Windows support.
PDF-XChange Viewer – free for private use with many features.
PDF Reader – a very small, free program to view, modify and print pdf files.
Safari – Apple’s web browser supports in-line PDF viewing. A disadvantage is that Safari lacks any advanced security settings.
Skim – an open source PDF reader and note-taker for Mac OS X.
Cool PDF Reader – a free PDF viewer/reader to view, print, and convert PDF files to TXT, BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG, WMF, EMF, EPS.
Xpdf – an open source viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
